  • Why lie about cheese?

Just got back from one of my fave restraunts. While there, the table next to me had a guy that ordered the salad, and asked for no cheese.

Well, more like demanded it because he was high allergic to dairy.

Fine. Cool. I can understand being a bit of a jackass and firm about something that could be deadly.

Waitress then asked for what dressing.

SC: "Ranch, and extra of it"

Waitress stood there for a moment "Are you sure? That has da-"

SC: "Yes I'm sure! I'll pay extra if I have too, just have lots of it"

Waitress stood there for a moment, walked off rolling her eyes.

Dude ate the whole salad, dressing and all.

I have never even seen that in my life. Why lie about cheese? Just say you don't want any, and they'll do it. Why claim your allergic to dairy, then get something that has dairy in it. Head spinning.

I guess people do it because they really, really don't like the item in question and want to emphasize that they don't want any on their salad/sandwich/whatever. There was a Not Always Right once about a dude who demanded a sandwich with no tomato because he was deathly allergic, and the person at the counter cleaned everything and special made the sandwich with no tomato...and then the dude loaded on extra ketchup.

It's true, sometimes folks in the kitchen screw up and put stuff on when it's requested to be left off, especially if it's a common thing, like say cheese on a burger. So the customer probably thinks that claiming they have an allergy will make it more likely that the kitchen staff will be extra careful not to put the offending item on their meal. Still not cool, though.

People do this, and I swear it baffles me, too. I sometimes wonder if it's not a way to get attention.

A woman came over to my mom's house for a big seafood dinner once and had said she was allergic to seafood.

Okay, let me say for the record that I don't care how compelling the company might be, if someone was having a cashew feast, I would stay the hell away. Far, FAR away. I don't care who was on the guest list. I'm just sayin'.

But okay, the woman decides our company is worth risking horrible death over. Color me flattered. So my mom, at considerable trouble, makes her her own separate dishes sans seafood.

Woman shows up and eats some seafood.

I was pretty pissed off on my mom's behalf. I'm sorry, but if you're allergic, you don't "just eat a little." It does not work that way. You're either allergic or you ain't.

So yeah. People freaking do this and I can't fathom it, either. I have to think it's a way to feel special.

I'm lactose intolerant and can't have " soft" dairy like milk, butter or cream but I can have "hard" dairy like certain cheeses and yogurt. They're cultured differently and don't effect me the same but I don't say I'm allergic.

Actually, my best friend cannot, physically, stomach fresh or part-cooked tomatoes -
tomato sauce he's fine with, and doesn't seem to have much issues with properly cooked tomatoes. Something, we suspect, to do with acid levels or ...?
But I'd say something that makes you wildly throw up within a couple hours of eating is probably broadly speaking an 'allergy'.

because if you're one of the many people like me (or me, or me etc)
that when you voluntarily cut dairy out of your diet you didn't realize that hey ranch is dairy based. whoops!
I can have it, daughter cannot and its easier for me to not have it around to prevent cross contamination by accident.
...but yesh, please don't lie about being allergic or at least give some effort and say you are sensitive to it so that it makes SOME sense.

My allergies are strange. I am allergic to a lot of fruits and vegetables, but only if they're raw. Peeling and/or cooking them helps. For instance, I'm allergic to apples. Certain brands I can tolerate if I peel them and eat them raw, such as Honey Crisp. Others, like Granny Smith, I can't eat raw at all, even if I peel them first. Even with Honey Crisp, if I eat too much, I will start to feel itchy (my symptoms are like hayfever symptoms, where I get itchy nose/eyes/throat, watery eyes, etc. I have never had an attack where I felt I was in danger, I have never had trouble breathing or anything like that.) And I can eat apple anything as long as it's cooked -- applesauce, apple pie, apple butter, baked apples -- all good. So I can kind of understand someone saying that they have an allergy but can tolerate a little of whatever it is they're allergic to. And for the record, my allergies are allergies, not intolerances. I've had the allergy tests done.

That being said, I would never tell someone I was allergic to something, then expect them to make something separate for me, then eat whatever it was that I said I was allergic to. If I'm going to eat something I'm allergic to, I'll do it on my own. And if someone served food that I knew had something I was allergic to in it, I just wouldn't eat it.

Someone mentioned their friend can't eat tomatoes (ehhh... scrool wheel so far away... )
It could be the texture of them. I can't eat tomatoes, raw or cooked, peeled or not, in a box nor with a fox. The second I register them, I start dry heaving. Yet tomato sauce, paste, chutney all go down fine.

But if I'm getting a burger that normally has them, I just say, "No tomato please". Why claim about the allergy and make all that effort to be an ass?

I've had people tell me it's physically impossible to be allergic to mangoes and not be allergic to latex... and yet, here I stand!

That's like saying a person who is allergic to poison ivy must always be allergic to cashews. Most people who are allergic to rhus (poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac) can turn around and eat cashews (also rhus family) to their heart's content.

I am not one of these people, but I am in the minority, not the majority.

                      - from what i've been told by medical professionals - the "flags" for a latex allergy are Avocados, Kiwi, and Bananas. (not saying Mangoes aren't in there too - i won't eat them them or Papaya, as both taste like a mix between peach and banana to me) BUT i am allergic to those 3 - and as mentioned elsewhere thankful that i am NOT allergic to latex

                      that being said:

One night I went through the drive-thru at Toxic Hell for a 6 layers burrito; I specifically asked for "NO Guac, I'm allergic" - the girl taking my order got interupted by a male voice "So that's EXTRA Guac?" and I said "No, NO NO! NO GUAC, I'm ALLERGIC!"

pulled up - got my burrito - checked it in the poor light of the drive-thru and didn't see any guac, so drove off to the bf's place, got there, and it was a good thing i double checked my burrito - it HAD guac. I was mad

drove back to the Toxic Hell, went inside and asked to speak to the manager - i was so mad i was shaking - i explained what happened, and informed him that i didn't know if someone thought they were being funny, or what, but it was not cute, i'm deathly allergic (yes i will go into anaphylaxis); to his credit, he did remake my burrito, and a second one, w/ no Guac on either -

My sister is allergic to: Raw Tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli - that i know of, I think there are few more, and what it is, there is a chemical in them that breaks down when the tomatoes are cooked, but in the cabbage and related veggies, it doesn't break down and instead becomes intensified. So my sister can eat ketchup, spaghetti sauce, pizza etc, but not the Raw tomato - so she could do exactly like the guy in someone else' story.... i've even seen her pour a bowl of salsa, to eat w/ chips, and pick out all the tomatoes

one of my bosses is allergic to tomatoes in any form; Tomatoes, Strawberries, & Coconut.

I am the opposite of my sister when it comes to tomatoes - I WILL eat them raw (burger, salad etc) but i can't stand them when cooked - i pick tomato chunks out of my spaghetti....

I'm allergic to kiwi, mango, banana, and avocado, but not latex. A friend of mine, on the other hand, is allergic to latex but not to any foods.

This isn't an allergy, but people have been calling bullshit on me in recent times because I say I can't drink milk without breaking out, unless it's whole milk, which I don't really care for anyway, but they see me eat cereal with a tad of milk, eat mac and cheese, eat ice cream and other stuff with milk in it.

Milk (for drinking) is one of my acne triggers. I found this out by not drinking any milk for a week and only getting one or two new pimples versus the usual several.

I think it's the hormones and other means to take the fat out of skim and 1 and 2% milk, because if I drink whole, I'm alright.

But I can have stuff with milk IN it, I just can't drink a glass of milk with a meal.

My husband used to be fine for tomatoes but a couple years ago he noticed that they gave him a horrible stomach ache and contributed to his acid reflux. He cut them out of his diet and now he hasn't had an acid reflux attack in years.

He does miss tomatoes though. Few things are as yummy as fresh baked pepperoni pizza with red sauce. Ooo, or lasagna. Mmm... I love Italian.

If I couldn't have tomato products, I'd be upset.

I used to drink a half gallon of milk in a day or so. It was quite an adjustment to quit drinking milk. Of course, I buy the occasional half gallon of Silk instead, but it's expensive and tastes odd.
