  • You don't really expect to become road pizza inside a store

Here's the response I got from Sam's Club, plus the letter I sent them. The letter explains my grievance.

(HTML got a little weird in the copy and paste, I fixed the worst of it)

RecoveringKinkoid, I want to first aploigize for the incident that happen in the club. I want you to know that we are reviewing the tapes as I type this email and the operator of the forklift will be held accountable. This is in no way the way we operate our business. I want to thank you for bringing it to our attention and I want you to know that all forklift operators will be addressed. You mentioned not having spotters and this too will be addressed. I will personally ensure that this issue is taken care of. Again I apoligize for you not feeling safe while shopping with us.

    Hi,

Just taking some time to tell you how close I, my five year old daughter, and several other people came to getting killed in your XXXX location in South Carolina today.

The answer is Pretty close. In my particular case, about three feet or so.

This incident Im going to tell you about happened roughly between three and four in the afternoon, possibly a little later. Its important to understand the store was pretty heavily crowded. So theres really no excuse for this incident.
I was walking up one of the two main corridors that lead up to the front of the store, pushing a very heavy cart with a bad wheel. Riding in this cart was my five year old daughter. There was a woman walking ahead of me. The cart stuck for a moment, breaking my stride, and when I faltered in my step, a fork lift came tearing out of a side aisle (about where the office supplies are, I think), speedingand I do mean SPEEDING between me and the woman I was walking behind. If I had not paused to get a better grip on the cart I was pushingand I only hesitated for an instant the forklift would have crashed right into me and my daughter at a high speed.

It tore down the next aisle at the same speed, not even pausing, and I assume made its way down to the other side of the store.

The beeping alarm had been sounding. However, it had been sounding steadily all over the store for the last twenty minutes of my visit. It had been sounding off and on for the entirety of my visit, and I was probably in there for a total of an hour and half. If you cant see it, its impossible to tell where it is as the sound bounces and echoes. I am hard of hearing, and that does not help. I do look around as Im in the storeI know forklifts are in use, and I am aware of my surroundings. But pushing a cart down a main corridor, where you cant see over the shelves, I dont really expect to have to worry about being run over by a high speed vehicle.

Does your company not employ spotters? Ive worked at places myself where heavy equipment had to moved through crowds. We had people looking out for public safety. We sure as heck didnt drive things at high rates of speed across blind intersections on main corridors. Ive gone into other stores where they dont even let their customers down aisles where theyre moving heavy equipment. Yet, your company allows forklifts to play Speed Racer in crowded stores?

As a parent, I have enough to worry about without having to worry about my kid getting run over by a speeding vehicle inside a building. Needless to say, Im pretty freaked out. Probably not going to be back inside that particular store. I just cant risk it, if you dont have any sort of safety protocol. I hope the Harbison store is better, but you can bet Ill be finding out before I bring my kid in there. Can you imagine if the forklift had broadsided my cart with her in there? I hope you can, because right now, I cant imagine anything else. Although I sure wish I could. I doubt Im going to get any sleep tonight. It makes me want to vomit just thinking about it.

I did look around for a manager, but I didnt see anyone to lodge a complaint with. Im certainly not going to take it out on the cashier. So I figured Id look on your site.

This may come as a huge shock to you all, but if you kill someone because you are playing fast and loose with public safety, youre going to end up embroiled in a big, bloody, lawsuit. The irresponsibility I witnessed today was beyond the pale. Shameful.

When I worked at Sam's Club & whenever we used the forklift on the floor during the day, it was REQUIRED to have TWO spotters-one in front & one in the back. PLUS it was REQUIRED that both spotters & forklift driver wear yellow reflective vests. & depending on the area that the forklift was in operation, sometimes there needed to be more than two spotters. PLUS the forklift had to drive at a slow speed & to honk the horn to warn people that the forklift was in operation. There was NO excuse for it to be driven at a high rate of speed.
What happened is IMMEDIATE grounds for termination.
I've heard of horror stories of people being killed by driving a forklift carelessly.

Excellent letter! Sounds like they're taking it seriously at least!

I have to say, I've never seen anything like that at the Sam's I shop. Hopefully it was a case of one lone dinkus who let the power of a vehicle overcome his good sense.

When I worked at the wholesale club, forklift drivers could face termination if they operated without a spotter. One of the good managers I knew (my friend The Mot's dad, in fact) even did get fired over it. (And yet somehow, Sucky Manager JA got away with it a few years later. TANJ, eh?)

Did they lay off spotters to save money?

I'm guessing the guy in the forklift was in a hurry for something and didn't want to chase down spotters or something.

I don't even have a forklift license and even I know that you're supposed to honk when you're coming up to an intersection. Of course, it could be that an SC complained about that because they were startled so rather than doing what was right, they caved...

                  Good Gravy!

I've not been in our local Sam's in a few years now but from what I can recall of my shopping visits there, I don't recall ever witnessing such carelessness.

I have never witnessed this at either of my local Costcos. Both stores are regularly filled with the sound of beeping as they maneuver the lifts and pallet jacks around the buildings.

If that did happen, though, as I don't have a kid and am known to be ornery, I'd chase that guy's ass down, get his name, and then hunt down a manager to have words with. And I get more insistent on seeing someone when people's safety is at risk.

At my Costco, they will close off a lane in order to get the fork lift in there to get whatever . . . and they still use spotters.

Of course the dumbass SC's will flip the yellow tape right up, walk under it, and stroll behind the forklift like they haven't a care in the world

I would have been screaming bloody murder on the spot had that been me. I applaud your calm, collected response.

I have OCD with shopping carts and never use carts with wobbly/squeaky/broken wheels so, if that were me. I wouldn't have been as lucky. That is terrifying...

I'm a pretty peaceful person by nature, but I think in this case, I would have gone into hunt mode until I found the driver of this forklift and publicly humiliated him in the middle of the store for being so reckless and making sure it was on film to post on youtube later so I could send it to both the news and consumer websites.

To think of what could have happened had it been 2 seconds later and you kept walking... this person and store needs a visit from OSHA.

I'm a little angry at myself for not doing exactly that. I guess it's a little harder with a little kid in tow. Plus, honestly, I was caught so flat footed, it took me a few minutes for my brain to start firing on all pistons again.

Makes sense, especially when your first thought is of your children and making sure they are okay. I would certainly high tail it back to the store now that you're thinking clearer and demand to talk to the store manager and take all the info you can put together with you with dates, times, and what happened so they can pinpoint the person.

I don't have a whole lot of faith in corporate level to do anything anymore.
