Some areas of PA are getting like that. 20 years ago, Route 19 from Pittsburgh south to West Virginia was pretty empty. That was, until the taxes in Allegheny County (mainly Pittsburgh) started creeping up. That drove quite a few people out of town...who then went south. Not surprisingly, Route 19 is clogged with traffic now, and shopping malls are all over the place. It doesn't seem to show any signs of slowing down...which is causing some people to move even *further* south.Quoth Gurndigarn View PostPlenty of places in the west are becoming annoyed with the number of Californians who move there to get away from the cities... then insist that the place just needs a few coffee shops... and a mall... and some bigger roads... and a good nightclub... and...
What gets me about many of those communities, is that they're all the same. I mean, the houses are huge as hell, and literally right on top of each other. Doesn't stop developers from getting $300,000 to a half-million for some of them
I don't know about you all, but if I'm going to drop that much cash on a house, I want some land around it.

When I lived in Jackson (Hole) Wyoming many of the people I met out there were like me, from the east coast. Some of the locals had bumper stickers that said "Wyoming has an East Infection". Pretty funny. It was only topped by the "Dick Cheney Skis in Jeans" stickers....he has a house there.Quoth Gurndigarn View PostPlenty of places in the west are becoming annoyed with the number of Californians who move there to get away from the cities... then insist that the place just needs a few coffee shops... and a mall... and some bigger roads... and a good nightclub... and...If watermelons are made up of water, what are kumquats made up of?

If I'm going to drop that kind of money on a house, it sure as hell isn't going to look like every other house in the neighborhood, either.Quoth protege View PostWhat gets me about many of those communities, is that they're all the same. The worst set of McMansions I ever came across was in Califorina, in one of the trendier areas (near pebble beach), houses that probably sell for several million now (they were under a million at the time, though).Quoth Bella_Vixen View PostIf I'm going to drop that kind of money on a house, it sure as hell isn't going to look like every other house in the neighborhood, either.
Every fourth one had a turret.
I mean, I like turrets and all, but, like, why?

Then there's the damntourists (Yes, it's one word, like damntexans. Though I do make exceptions for some Texans!
) that come to Santa Fe every summer, wandering around in the street on the plaza even though the locals are trying to drive through there! Apparently, they don't realize that people actually live there. Imagine that, it's only the STATE CAPITOL! They also spend a lot of time talking to the Native Americans selling jewelry on the porch of the Palace of the Governors as if they are stupid savages not realizing that a lot of them could buy and sell every one of the tourists!
We've also got the people that show up for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta that also don't realize that the city does not shut down for the duration of the Fiesta. We are all still trying to get to work and live our normal lives you morons. It frightens me that every single blessed year, they have to make PSAs that if you are going to watch the balloons and you're driving, for the love of all, PULL OVER BEFORE YOU CAUSE A WRECK!
And don't forget about the transplants that go on and on and on and on about how much better it is where ever it is that they came from! I would like to invite them to move the hell back and to take the East Coast attitude with you. Our unofficial state nickname is "Menana (Spanish for "tomorrow") Land". I had one lady the other day that I seriously thought was asking "Do you happen to potty?"
I asked her to repeat her question and it turns out she was asking if we had "The Departed"!
You know, if the locals can't understand you, either try to lose some of the accent or go the hell back to where you came from!
Off Topic - I've got a question for East Coast people. Is it common or customary to park your cart at the end of a grocery store aisle and then shop on down the aisle? Or like the ones I saw at Sunflower the other day that stationed their cart right smack in everyone's way in the produce section and used it as a base for shopping in the rest of the store (walk off, get something, bring it back to the cart, repeat ad naseum)? It's floating wicker propelled by fire!

Where I live you will see these McMansions just about everywhere. It's gotten bad that they're starting to cut into the country side a bit because of this. Quite a few towns in my county are affluent and you can bet that those places will be there. As a matter of fact, one of the developers has a few reserved spots and suites named after the developer at Whiskeyclone.Quoth protege View PostWhat gets me about many of those communities, is that they're all the same. I agree. We should just use rubber buckshot. The ones that don't STFU after the first 3 rounds to the butt are the dumb ones and you can just put those ones in the pillory then make extra money selling old fruit.Quoth Ree View PostWell, killing people seems a little extreme. Also, how would we determine who is stupid? It's a rather subjective thing.

No, here in ME it is customary for everyone to block up the aisles talking to each other, then get pissy when you say "excuse me" so you can get to the product you need. In a town of only 65,000 people it is pretty easy to run into people you know...why have reunions in the grocery store?Quoth Pagan View PostOff Topic - I've got a question for East Coast people. For fun you should move the carts left unattended to a different part of the store, or do your shopping out of other peoples carts.

How about coating the shot with one of Chile Addict's many fine rocket-fuel-esque hot sauces (or even the pure capsaicin they sell)? Get that in a minor abrasion, and...yowza. One less damntourist on the planet (although Mars might get a bit miffed at the invasion)

No, rock salt is very poor. You have to get so close for it to break skin you run the risk of being so close that you cause a serious wound. The Rock Salt thing was tested in "The Box O' Truth #33" You might as well beat them over the head with the gun, it will be more effective."Magic sometimes sounds like tape." - The Amazing Johnathan
