    This is my snake!
Awwww, who's the little cutiepie ...

I love snakes, and kept various ones for years [and also had a couple tarantulas as well, until at one point I had to rehome the snake after a burglar killed Fluffy and Snuggles [my tarantulas] and brought the attention of my landlord to the fact I had pets.]

I was doing dishes tonight when a spider dropped down in front of me. I did pull his string down, but I set him on the counter and let him scamper off. I have a soft spot for spiders (although there are some that creep me out a little--usually black ones). This little guy was adorable, and clever.
We have a lovely huge wolf spider living in our house, it is fun watching it take care of random bugs that find their way into the house. I will be sad when it finally dies or gets eaten by the cat =(

Ooh -- my favourite spider ever was an Argiope aurantia who made her web across the squash patch at my last apartment. I will not post pictures because I suspect this species to be very arachnophobia-triggering. But I'll post a link.

      http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/g...ow_argiope.htm

Also known as the golden writing spider, because of the zipper-like stabilimenta structure characteristic of their webs.

She was huge, scary, and colourful, like some kind of dire Christmas tree ornament.

I prefer that cute little smiling spider that the picture was going around the internet last year. Though I just saw a GIF of some spider that flipped up some sort of colorful carapace, not sure if it is a real spider or some sort of shopped one.

I saw a Carolina Wolf Spider up in Brevard couple weeks ago. They aren't the biggest local spiders...that honor goes to the Black and Yellow Garden Spider and the Golden Silk Spider. But it was the biggest freaking wolf spider I'd ever seen. Seriously, it was so huge that some of the other folks up at Rainbow Falls climbed down there and took her picture. She was an impressive lady. And pretty much as big as a Black and Yellow or Golden Silk.

I have a pic, too, but I think a lot of folks here don't want to see it.

Nothing against snakes. I wouldn't try to kill one unless it was trying to bite me-- then all bets are off. Ditto for most other bitey critters.

Likewise, nothing against spiders. They kill other bugs, so I generally leave them be unless I find them near anything hygienic or in a food preparation area.

I'm still a little sad about the time recently when I spotted a nice big fat black widow in our garage. Nowhere near the actual house, just camped out by the garage door, having gotten nice and fat on little bugs trying to come inside for shelter. I told my folks about it, and Mom immediately grabbed a can of Raid and went out to zap it. She tried to get me to do it, but I said I wouldn't -- "It's killing the other bugs, it's got no reason to come inside."

Stink bugs, now, I catch those little buggers and flush 'em down the toilet. Last thing I want is more of them showing up.

That's a part of the world where you have every right to be afraid of them. Also Australia. I said to an Aussie acquaintance that I wasn't afraid of spiders or snakes, but she said that you HAVE to be if you go to Australia.
Even those, I wouldn't fear. Have a healthy respect for, yes, but not fear. Fear is reserved for what humans are capable of doing....because they can be devious.

Snakes, etc.? They're just doing what they do, not going out of their way to get you.

I have an agreement with snakes, spiders, etc. They leave me alone I leave them alone (besides shooing them out of someplace they shouldn't be). Then again I wince when somebody kills a bug, poor bug didn't do anything (I usually grab something like a dust pan or paper and move them outside).
I do the same thing relocating. I'd let the occasional wolf spider roam my apartment if it wasn't for being worried of stepping on them at night.

Even a child of the earth, while creepy, doesn't really bother me. I carried a centipede out once. I found it in a soup pot that I kept in the drawer beneath the stove. I still haven't figured out how it got in there!

My only exception are cockroaches. Those need to die a fiery death. They serve no purpose. All of 'em, even the Madagascar hissing ones. Of course, my hatred may or may not have something to do with my phobia....

I got bitten by a freaking Jerusalem cricket. The bastard didn't even have any reason to bite me, either, as he was walking across my foot and I wasn't moving and hadn't even realized he was there until then. >_<

But as much as I think they're revolting, I can't kill them. They're too big and I can't stomach the thought of what squishing one might sound like. They get an express flight back outside if one gets in.

Meh, been bitten more times than I can count in some almost 50 years of managing snakes, I think my first snake was a garter snake at the age of 5 - we had just gotten back from Germany and my Dad found it in the yard and brought it in to show me. Most recent snake bite was a couple years ago, baby rattler found its way into the house and it was definitely more scared of me so it snagged me when I grabbed it to toss it out to the chickens. Thing was just larger than a pencil, perfect snacking size for chooks and not old enough to make venom. I ill confess to killing adult rattlers, mainly because of the goddaughters and the livestock. I have one in the freezer right now waiting for a couple more so I can make chili.

Be aware, rattlers are endangered and protected in several states, including Connecticut. Don't let anyone informed catch you killing 'em.

Actually, since they hazard my farm animals, I get a pass on killing them. Same with deer bothering my sheep feed [when I still had sheep] though I can cap any wild fowl helping themselves to my bird chow. I am on good terms with fish and wildlife and animal control in my neck of the woods [heh]

Actually, most snakes would much prefer to avoid humans entirely. I have a whole passel of non rattlesnakes lurking around the farm, I have quite a colony of eastern ribbon snake [they look like a more refined version of a garter snake.] in one of my fencelines bordering the swampy area. Some red bellies, in an old woodpile that we aren't moving for that reason. We did see some eastern racers a few years ago, but haven't seen them recently. But then again I haven't been out poking around as much now I am getting gimpier. When we move and get into a much larger place I may get back into keeping snakes again.

Badass post, just restating what others have already made clear.

And my "bite me = you die" response is mostly because that would be my instinctive reaction. Of the "stupid bug, you go squish now!" variety.

It might be that if a snake bit me, I'd give it a good solid thwack and send it flying off a distance, and it will slither/limp/crawl away and carry on living. And that's fine. As long as it's not still biting me, I'm happy.
