I use the American Staffordshire Terrier method myself. The media refers to the breed as Pit Bull. She scares the crap out of people. Too bad she'd just lick'em silly.
I always said people were afraid of the wrong end of the Pit Bull. The worst thing my mom's dog could do was gas you to death in your sleep.

Weird that they would just drop a package on your step where anyone could grab it. Canada Post leaves a note in the mailbox and holds the package at the closest post office. It's really lovely.

the sweet vietnam vet on the second floor picked up a package for us while we were away for the weekend and left us a note. the next time he saw us he handed the package over and asked us how our vacation was.
I have a very nice Vietnam vet neighbor. I also have a Hell's Angel neighbor. I'm friendly with both of them. They could be why I haven't lost any packages. But with birthdays and holidays coming up, I'm getting more items shipped to my office, just in case.

My parents sent me a fairly expensive phone for my birthday. They weren't sure if the USPS leaves mail on my porch or not,* and didn't want to risk anyone taking my package. They sent it to the store my brother owns instead.

*We have larger boxes by the mailboxes for this sort of thing. The mailman puts the key to these larger boxes inside our mailboxes.

So some kid went up on your porch and grabbed a package? what the hell?
Even on a military base, the ghetto exists. A few years back, some kids down the street tried to steal my moms car, which mind you, has flashing police lights ontop, and a picture of her on the hood.

We live in a very old house, and our mailboxes used to be simple boxes of wood with a mail slot and a clasp anyone could open. It is also an apartment building. A tenant upstairs was always opening and reading our mail, including our bills, junk mail, birthday cards (money removed), etc. my parents invested in a mailbox that locks, with a slot too small for said tenant to slip her fingers through. Problem solved. (no idea if she was arrested or not, this happened about 15 years ago).

This is why I'm glad that not only do I have awesome neighbors, but that our USPS guy has a key to the apartment stairwells so he can leave the packages behind locked doors. The only major problems we've had now are when there's a substitute driver on the route who doesn't bother to read the apartment numbers correctly and leaves our packages in the wrong stairwell. The one time this happend so far (last Christmas), we had no reason to go poking around in other stairwells for our missing package, and the tenants of that particular stairwell didn't usually go out that way as it lead into our shared backyard rather than out to the parking lot and sidewalk. Luckily one of the residence coordinators went in there to talk to one of the tenants and noticed our lonely little package.

We have potential problems at the moment, seeing as we've got package boxes on our mailbox like Mr. Hero does, except that there's only two, so if more than two people get packages, the mailman just puts them all in there and puts the package drop key(s) in all relevant mailboxes. Thing is, once you put in the key, it doesn't come out again until the mailman resets the box himself, meaning Person #1 takes out their package, leaving #2 and #3 exposed to mail theft. Hubby's actually seen that number of packages in the box, too. Concerns have already been brought up with Housing, seeing as these are brand new boxes (the old boxes didn't have package drops). Methinks the mailman just needs to make sure not to put more than one package in any given package drop unless they're all for the same tenant.

And my only current preorder is for Skyward Sword, and that's mostly so I don't have to wait and hope that the local game stores actually have a copy when I get there. Plus there was a nifty preorder bundle available. I'll admit, I was swayed by the gold wiimote.

I approve of this preorder (see my avatar) and this is definitely getting added to my library.

Blarg, people and mail...don't they know it's a crime to steal it?
That's why I have any expensive goodies either shipped to the nearest store...or have my parents pick them up for me. Even though I live in the 'burbs, and my borough has a low crime rate...I don't want to take any chances. The exception, was the set of tires that I ordered for the MG. Bought those online (tirerack.com is awesome!) and when they came, the delivery guy carefully hid them behind my garbage cans near the garage. Nobody even knew that they were there.

My local computer retailer just happens to be right beside my workplace. So I can order stuff from them, and then simply go and pick it up.

I very recently did that for a complete set of components for my new computer - which required two luggage trolleys (one for the case, the other for the monitor) and almost all the rest in a full-size backpack. Fortuitously, the first train was a low-floor one with an automatic wheelchair bridge.

They have a variety of delivery options as well. One of the locally quirky ones is delivery to your nearest R-Kioski, a national chain of convenience stores. I suspect this would be most useful for people out in the countryside, where the nearest R-Kioski might be miles closer than the nearest post office.

Unfortunately they are about to move their main premises away from my workplace, so picking stuff up won't be quite as convenient as before. They are still on a tram route though, so it's not a complete disaster.

Heh ... this reminds me of something I did the other day. I was at Higher-End Big Green Supermarket and they have a pretty good deli counter. I was standing there waiting for my order and I see these foil-wrapped packages piled on top of the display case. So I'm wondering what on earth they've got up there and I reach for one and I hear from behind me, "I beg your pardon ... I believe that's mine."

Cue serious and stuttered apologies on my part ...

I've been startled a few times to come home and find packages tucked into people's doorways (including mine). Granted this is a 'secure' building so not just anybody can get in and roam around ... still doesn't mean everybody's honest. My apartment door is in a sort of cul-de-sac so it's not visible from the main hallway but still ... I'd prefer to have to go to the local postal substation to pick my stuff up.
