I'm in it for the roleplaying and story writing. I've been a story teller since I could read. Although I do like the art and the fursuit making, I wish I had that kind of talent! The only art I have is of my mouse character Dorothy I commissioned from a nice person on deviantart.

I guess it would be more accurate to say that there are very few furries who are unwashed, while there is a higher percentage of unwashed non-furries at conventions. Doesn't seem to matter if it is sci-fi, gamer, or something else, it just seems like people want to save those few minutes by skipping a shower.

But like you say, sometimes all it takes is having a room booked by yourself and being the person who bathed most recently...
I have always refused to go to a con, even a local con without having a room in the same hotel as the event [only made the goof twice, one con way back in the late 70s, and a Balticon I went to with a friend where she had friends in B'more that we stayed at the house of.] Other than it is nice to not have to commute to get to the con, being able to shower, nap, drop purchases off and not carry them around or change costumes makes the effort worth while. Quiet time is my friend, I get overwhelmed by crowds sometimes and just need to get a hot shower, snack and read a book for a while.

I can understand the furry mentality, I just can't get into it as far as some people. I will make hall costumes for furries though. I am working on one now. Actually I am making myself a hall costume that will also look good in a different color scheme for Tara, she has a mouse persona that is based on a cartoon - not sure who it is, but the mouse in question dresses like I dream of jeannie djini.

There is nothing wrong with identifying with being a furry - the negative stereotypes do suck but the only way to change that is to be a positive force of change
        That's my goal!

Actually, going along with this OT, that was the goal of the consultant for that infamous CSI:LV episode. He's a furry in the industry and he said that the original concept was absolutely cringe-inducing. What they settled on was several steps away, and an order of magnitude less insulting and inaccurate.

I have some art I picked up at a con several years back that is of a mouse genie girl. It's incredibly cute.

People being furry or dressing as such has never bothered me. I know it's for different reasons, but it just looks like cosplay to me. Do what you like ^_^ Besides, it's something different in a world that thinks "normal" is good

Plus I have a lot of non mainstream quirks so people like that piss me off. Ignorance is one of my biggest pet peeves.
No worries. Ignorance can be fixed. Stupid, however, is for life. Figure out which one you're dealing with and act accordingly -- Either gently explain, or run away fast, respectively.

Indeed. I have several friends that I haven't told but I've made sure to figure out if they'd be receptive if I told them.
Then there are the friends I've just straight up told.

I had to go Google 'furry' to figure out what the heck was being discussed. I don't know how Madam Buttinsky made the connection between your furry-dom and doing naughty things with animals and frankly I think I'd rather never find out. Sounds like there's nothing wrong with her mind that an industrial-strength vacuum cleaner couldn't fix ...

Tail waves (twin tails) to all his fellow furs, "Wow, there's a lot of us here, huh? I'm rather unique though being a taur (actually i have a biped fursona, my taur fursona (Woggle), and a chakat that's a part of me though not sure what/how much (K'Less)), in fact i'm one of three here in Arizona, and all three of us live at the Mesa Taurpit. I like that definition, prolly the best i've heard yet, i started as an artwork fan, and became a bit of a writer, though the well's been dry for years. Done a few cons, just about every major AC since 99 in fact. I'm always astounded by how much people have against us, yes, there's freaks here, but there's freaks in every fandom. Ok, maybe more in furry as we try to be non-judgemental, so the underground is a lot closer to the surface, but still, most of us are quite normal."

Are you referring to Therians, or am I missing your point?

Puss in Boots was an awesome movie . I need to get a lil' figurine now for my desk.

Some think they're animals trapped in human form.
Therians/weres aren't quite the same, but there's usually a fair bit of overlap in the communities. "Close as they can get" and all.

I've never [consciously] used the word to refer to someone with an impairment they can't do anything about.
