  • Get those apples away from my poor kids!

Yesterday was my oldest sons Christmas...excuse me...Winter party where they got to wear their PJ's to school and they watched Polar Express and partied. I did not want to waste gas going to get him after the party was over but he did not want to stay the rest of the school day and just sit there when he knew everyone else was going to be picked up after the party, lol. My neighbor that has kids that go to his school saw me with the younger two kids playing outside when she was leaving to get her kids and asked if I was picking him up and I told her no, that he was riding the bus. She offered to pick him up and since we are on each others kids emergency pick up list and she can get him with no problems I said sure. Anyway she decided since her kids were screaming for McDonalds even though they had been eating junk food all day she would take them, and take Seth as well since he was with them. She told me evidently all the other parents had the same idea

So of course they were packed which was no problem for her, she is a dream customer. She doesn't mind to wait, she doesn't mind if she gets a wrong order and has to wait to get it fixed, she doesn't get upset at anything and realizes retail and restaurant workers are human. So she is patiently waiting in line with her 3 kids and my son. She said she could not believe the amount of people that were loudly and rudely complaining about the wait time or a mistake with the order. She said that the line was literally out the door and the drive through was backed out into the road. She gets up to the front, orders, waits, and gets the food. I don't know if every McDonalds does this now or just this one because we have not been to McDonalds in a long time but the happy meals had a very small box with fries and then a bag of sliced apples. She said it looked like about half the amount of fries in the little box so they were cutting out some of the "bad" food and adding some apples. My son won't eat apples, he has a texture issue with them but he just put them to the side and one of her kids ate them. Like a normal person. But one mom would not have this. She was at the front and checked her order and saw the apples inside. She took them out and screamed, what is this s**t? I ordered fries with it, not f***ing apples! My friend said this lady was rather large, and that the cashier was maybe 16 and 5 feet tall and 80 pounds soaking wet. Very tiny and looked like she was about to run and hide. She said Ma'am the apples come with the meal and your fries are in there as well. The lady was not having any of this and went on a tirade about how she wanted fries, not apples, her kids would not eat Motherf***ing apples, she wants a normal order of fries, etc. At this point the tiny cashier was looking terrified. A manager came up and said he would give her a regular small fry for her meals and she could keep the apples. She THREW the apples at him and said I told you I don't want no F***ing apples, my kids ain't gonna eat those things.

My friend was in shock but sadly the story did not surprise me. What did surprise me was that my normally sweet friend that does not say anything bad about anyone at all said that in reality her and her kids needed to skip the fries and eat the apples so she didn't know why she was complaining

Man, I would've been sooooo tempted to actually say something like that ...

And it was nothing to get so pissy about. You don't want 'em? Fine, don't eat 'em. Order the biggest bag of fries they sell. But throwing them? At that point she should have been told to GTFO before the police were called. Or maybe just call them anyway.

I believe it's a company wide thing, the apples plus fries thing. I personally don't go for the apples at McDs, primarily because they treat them to keep them from oxidizing (turning brown); in theory it's just lemon juice like we'd use at home, but I don't trust them. The texture and taste just ends up a little "off." But at least they have removed the caramel dip from the boxes. I didn't see the point in offering apples instead of fries and then offering high sugar/high calorie caramel dip alongside.

What I can't figure out now is if they offer hamburgers and soda as options or if they only offer chicken nuggets and milk/juice now.

That's correct. They've been rolling out the new Happy meals with smaller fries, plus apples.

Soda and hamburgers are still options. One blog I read claimed that the milk actually cost extra, though since I haven't set food in a McD's in God knows when (it's been a couple years at least), I don't know for sure.

That woman was simply crazy and out of line.

I usually order my happy meals with apple dippers, anyway, so I didn't notice a difference in the fries. :P

I have to ask, though. Do you happen to live in Florida, pageantmama? Our schools do the same thing at Christmas time (the kids have a party and watch Polar Express, then most of the kids go home early).

No we live in NW GA. I think it is a pretty common thing or something. We used to do the same thing at the daycare I worked at for our Christmas party Seth said he is getting tired of watching Polar Express but it is cool to go to school in his pajamas.

Man, no kidding. All of the schools I've visited during the holidays have watched Polar Express during their parties. I don't understand - Polar Express isn't that great a movie (not to me, anyway). I can think of several that would be more entertaining for the kids, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Most of the kids I've seen really enjoy that movie (the old one and the newer one with Jim Carrey).

I feel qualified to answer happy meal concerns.
Yes, all McDs are doing this apple dippers plus french fries thing. Yes, the fries are this really itty bitty box that makes me laugh every time I see it.
You can get a hamburger, cheeseburger, or nuggets. You can get soda, milk/choc milk, juice, tea, coffee, whatever drink you want that we serve in the store with the happy meal. Some drinks will obviously cost extra to upgrade to. Milk is not one of those that costs extra at my store, but since McDs are mostly franchised the owner can set the price, so every store will be different.
Also, if you hate apples you can get just fries, or vice versa. We just give you two of the tiny fries or two of the tiny apples. Not many people know this and we won't offer the option unless the customer specifically ASKS for it. I think the manager in this story was just being nice with offering to give the lady a small fry instead of two of the itty bity fries, but as I have said every store is different. All I know is that in our corporate wide training on the new happy meals we were told that if a customer wants only fries that they get two itty bitty boxes, but I guess an owner can override this decision.
And as someone has already said, no more caramel dip. At all. It's been discontinued. It's not something we just stopped giving out automatically, you just can't get it at all - period.

I don't know how old your son is, but it's clear he's more mature than that cow-stomer. At least he has the sense to to just give his apples to someone else and not bitch at the people who work there.

My niece asked for Polar Express and Home Alone DVDs for Christmas. I got her the former on sale (7 bucks), but refuse to get her the latter. Some things just should not be inflicted on children at any price.

Hey, what's so bad about Home Alone?

I went to see that at the theater when it first came out and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was very seldom my parents took us to the theater.

As for Polar Express, it's playing on one of the TVs at work on a recurring loop and I have the whole movie pretty much memorized. I wish I were dead.

Apparently this was the first movie I saw in theater ever. My parents have told me the I cowered the whole movie and afterwards asked something to the effect of 'when can I see it again?'

Poor you. Not my favorite movie at all. I watched it with my parents (and most likely my brother) at my parents' house.

Good grief. Now I feel old. The first film I ever saw at the cinema was Bambi, & I had to leave the seat flipped up so that I was tall enough to see the screen.

One factoid I noticed from the credits is that Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari both provided voice work on the movie.

It was a Bosom Buddies reunion!
