  • Fun at the Fair

I went to the Bloomsburg Fair yesterday, and these are some of the things I witnessed.

    1. At the Horse Pulling contest, I saw a young woman in flip-flops (thong sandals). This fair is an Agricultural Fair (ie: there is a large amount of livestock, especially near the Arena).

    2. At the candy game, a woman came up to the booth and said "I only have a $100 bill. Can you break it?"

    3. I got a couple of Hot Dogs from a vendor, and promptly dropped them. I said "Aw, crap" and when the lady asked, I told her what happened. She immediately made 2 more hot dogs for me no charge. I thanked her, and asked her how many times people yelled at her for the same sort of thing, she told me that they don't get free hot dogs then.

Who wears flip-flops to a rodeo, fair, or the like??? I can understand wearing them to a beach but places like that are full of things that can step on your toes (speaking from experience here)! I do however have a friend who wears FFs during the winter, summer, snow, rain, sleet, you name it. She also complains about the cold

I see that all the time at the fair here. I also see women prancing along in 4 inch, wooden wedge heels. The fairgrounds cover a large area and include areas with gravel, or grassy areas with lumpy ground underneath, etc. Just thinking about it makes my feet hurt.

Personally speaking, how is it a good idea to where flipflops in a place where a thousand pound animal could potentially step on your feet? And that's not even touching on the potential germs and filth that could wind up on your skin.

Speaking as someone who once wore flipflops to tour the Strip in Vegas, ew.

Lol to be honest I live in flip flops until it starts snowing. I wear flip flops all over so I dont see this being bad. But then again I grew up only wearing shoes when I went to school and as soon as I got home socks and shoes came off.

The OP had me thinking more of the large animal droppings the woman could potentially step in, although I have heard some people take pleasure in running through a cow pasture barefooted.

When I worked as a reporter/photographer, one of my coworkers went to an agricultural fair nicely dressed up, including dress shoes.

As far as I know she only dressed up for that type of event once.

I agree. While I like to wear flip flops from April to mid-October, I do understand that there are times when those shoes aren't appropriate or safe to wear.

I don't wear flip flops or sandals anywhere I'm going to be walking around all day! Ouch!

I live in my Merrell sandals from spring - fall. They are incredibly comfortable, more than any other shoes I have. Like walking all day on vacation or at the zoo or Fair and my feet don't hurt amazingly comfortable.
Worth every penny they cost two years ago and what I spent for my second pair this summer.

Flip flops only annoy me if they are filthy dirty, and if the person doesn't know how to walk in them. You CAN pick up your feet in thong sandals, I know because I do it. The sound of a whole group of people shuffling and dragging their flip-flopped feet through a store or down a sidewalk is on my top ten list of most annoying sounds in the world, right up there with snoring, public nail-clipping, and 'snorting back' instead of going to the bathroom and getting rid of the damn loogie privately.

My first time at Universal/Islands of Adventure in Orlando, I witnessed a woman going through Citywalk wearing form fitting black jeans, a denim jacket with a faux fur collar, and four inch heels. This was late September in Florida and it was really hot. It was also early on in the day, so it's not like she was hitting up any of the fancy clubs and such.

Also, who the hell carries a $100 to a fair?! I'd be too petrified of dropping it, and in that situation, well, someone's gonna get lucky. My brother-in-law once picked up a Ben Franklin at our county fair.

Too bad the fair doesn't have someone doing a "hot and cold" science show as entertainment. Someone comes along with a Benjamin, your response is "I can't break it but (guy doing show) can. He dips it in water (with a bit of soap added so that it soaks in faster), then liquid nitrogen. The customer gets his Benjamin broken, but not in the way he had expected.

Australians practically live in thongs without serious feet issues. They're actually healthier than shoes as the feet can breathe and bacteria that give you soggy feet or make them smell can't breed.

Mind you, regardless of what you were wearing, if a 750kg hours stands on your foot you might develop a bit of a limp.

                              750kg hourglass?

And yes, we do live in thongs in summer. that's the feet kind by the way, not the underwear kind....

Also thongs can be sold for cheap: usually $1 or so. I haven't needed to spend more than about $5-$10 on a pair of thongs to get me through the summer.

Hell, even the local Target sells thongs for about $4 a pair.
