  • 3-time's the charm Granny!

Made a short errand run. Was waiting at a 2-way stop with main street running right-left. Looking to my left to make sure it was clear. 1-vehicle coming from my left, when it suddenly got cut off by a car that pulled-out of a parking lot, then stopped in the road. The oncoming car honked and swerved quick! I had to wait for that 2nd car to pass the intersection before I could make my way straight across. This car happened to be turning left (no directional) and I ended-up behind it. It was driving on the wrong side of the double yellow lines, so I stayed behind it on the correct side to be safe. Good thing too because it started to make a right hand turn with no signal. It must have been the wrong lot, because it swerved back out into the road, cutting me off and making me honk at it. It then proceeded through the parking lot (still no turn signals) and parked outside the store. I ended-up going inside after this 4'11" tall little old lady with glasses like coke bottles. I spoke to her near the register (very quietly) and let her know that she has to pay attention to her driving and using her turn signals because she almost caused several accidents. She just said "oh." made her purchases and left.

She was on the wrong side of the yellow lines again when she left the parking lot. Sigh.

One of the worst accidents I heard of was caused by a little old lady. The intersection was a complicated light pattern handling five decent sized roads intersecting. It turned out L.O.L. was almost full-blind when the cops checked her out after the pileup she caused. When she was interviewed about it, she said she couldn't see the lights, so she just followed the car in front of her at intersections. That day there was no other car in front of her...

I'd feel bad for someone that age potentially losing their license, but that sort of driving behavior probably should have resulted in a call to the police.

Just saw it on the news feeds today. Another woman who is probably too old to be driving.. Thankfully no one killed, but it's still close.

          Why?

That's why they aren't reported until they hurt someone it's a privilege not a right.
Would you feel the same about a 25 year-old drunk driver? Someone taking prescription medication because of a chronic illness? Someone on a cellphone?

A hazardous driver doesn't become less dangerous because they're over some arbitrary age.

I would feel bad for an elderly driver being stripped of their license because not all communities offer free transportation or food/drug delivery to seniors and they usually can't afford to pay for a taxi.

However, I've been calling for mandatory testing of anyone over the age of 60 for years now because I recognize the imminent danger they pose to themselves and others. If they can't see or reach the pedals or get confused too easily - of COURSE they shouldn't be driving.

Agreed. She's losing her judgement and should not be behind the wheel of a car.

My own grandmother voluntarily gave up driving (and gave me her car) when she found herself entering a freeway exit. But she was sensible enough to realize she was starting to have problems; sadly, not everyone is willing to admit their own weaknesses. It's a terrible blow to the ego to recognize that you're not as sharp or fast as you used to be, that others are at risk because of that and you will have to depend on others to get you around.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Gee, if only we had a place where we could call each other out and argue and debate mandatory testing for senior drivers.

If only such a place existed outside the CS forum. If only we were able to go there and have these discussions.

                Oh, wait!
                There is!
There is a place for that.
                It's called fratching.

Raise your hands, anyone who has heard of it. Raise your hands anyone who is already an active member over there.

Oooh, such a shame you had to go and forget it was there and get all snarky with each other over here on CS.

Fratching's very existence has managed to ward off many a CS infraction when it's properly used.

Hmm. Odd that nobody thought to take the bickering over there.

                Thread closed.

Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.
