  • No, YOU move!

Saw this little gem while driving though downtown *shudder* the other day.

It's a three-lane, one-way road. Little Hatchback is in the far left lane, Big Work Truck is in the center lane, and I'm in the right lane.

As I'm driving, I hear Little Hatchback honk. Then I hear Big Work Truck honk back. I glance in the rearview, and see Little Hatchback slamming on his brakes as Big Work Truck casually drifts into the left lane. He'd almost sideswiped Little Hatchback, and even though he obviously KNEW that car was there (vs. not knowing if the car was in a blind spot), he simply continued to force his way in and even had the audacity to HONK BACK!

I was too far ahead to see if there was a company name on the side of Big Work Truck. I wish I could have gotten that information, so I know which company not to give my business to.

You must live around here, because I see the same thing everyday. I used to think I knew what merging was, now I really do. It's like a game of chicken except you're both going the same way sans turn signal. Heaven help you if you have the right of way and won't make space, because you WILL be honked at or rammed.

This one happened to my mom 18 years ago. When my mom was coming home from work a truck tried to cut her off to get into the left lane and slammed her into the center divider, the car was badly damaged and the asshole trucker didn't stop. She told us she thought he was going to kill her.

There are semi trucks and big delivery trucks around here that, after so many blinks of their signal, will just start pushing over.

My dad told me about semis and the "3 click rule". Supposedly, after 3 blinks of the signal, if you don't move out of the way, they'll just shove over.

It's rude and obnoxious. They should have been in the correct lane to begin with. I make it a point to not switch lanes unless I absolutely have to, and try to stay in the lane I need to be in to avoid stuff like that. Just because you're bigger doesn't mean you own the road and can push others around.

Heh, I had to drive a u-haul down the NJ Parkway (maybe it was the Turnpike, I forget) during rush hour once. You'd think that 'hey, that's big enough that people wouldn't mess with it', right? WRONG! Approaching a toll plaza, TWO 18-wheelers decided they wanted my lane at the same time, one on either side of me!

I decided to just apply the brakes and let THEM figure out who wanted to yield the lane. I'd just spend all day picking every item I'd owned out of a scorched apartment, I wasn't picking it all out of a car crash too!
