  • Self-Sighting: The Busted Water Bottle

Hubs and I drove to a local park to go for a run today. When we got back to the car, we did some stretching before we got in. Hubs was carrying the water bottle, and he'd perched it on top of the car while he stretched. Then we hopped in the car and headed home.

We actually got about a half a mile before we heard SLIIIIDE Kathunk! and realized that the water bottle had fallen off the roof of the car. We had to turn around and pick up the bits of shattered plastic off the roadway. Other drivers weren't too happy about the trash, especially the poor guy behind us who had to dodge it!

    Oh, I've done this myself.

Me and my friend went to subway, and we're on our way back to his house to grab his stuff. I go around a right turn at a good clip, see something fly off my car, and hear the distinctive crash noise of a large, full plastic cup hitting pavement at speed. I left my cup on top of the car and it flew about ten feet when I took a tight right.

The irony is, it landed in about the right spot where the traffic cop stands when the drawbridge is up. It's a damn good thing the drawbridge was down at that time.

Once my mom did that with my little brother's baby bottle. Thankfully a guy on a bicycle picked it up and gave it to us when we were at a stop light.
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.

One day I stepped out the front door as a car drove by. It had a large handbag sitting on the roof. I hollered a load "HEY!" The car stopped and the driver looked at me quizzically. They were thankful when I told them about the handbag.

I was down in Florida in January 1986, riding in a car driven by my mother's friend, when I suddenly remembered that I'd left my camera on the roof of the car.

          A half hour ago.

We stopped the car, and it was still there.

(It was one of these: 110-film camera with a zoom lens, very flat except where the lens protrudes, and the wide bit had gotten itself wedged under the edge of the car's roof rack. Freakin' miracle. I still have the camera, although I don't think the flash works anymore.)

I had used that camera to take pictures of the Challenger taking off and subsequently blowing up; a family friend who also happened to be in Florida at that time was a former press photographer, and he'd wangled a few press passes to Cape Kennedy. I was two miles from the launch site when the "severe malfunction" took place. I don't remember if it was before or after the explosion that this episode took place; if it was in fact afterwards, it's a real good thing I recovered the camera, just for the historicity of the photos contained therein.

We pulled up beside a car at a red light, the passenger had caught her coat in the door and it was dragging on the ground. They looked quite alarmed when dad (big guy, black bushy beard) signalled her to roll down her window. Next light they did the same to us to thank us .

My grandparents were there as well. They were picking oranges at a "pick your own" place and my grandpa just happened to have his camera with him.
Now to ask my Dad where those pictures went to.
Is it really SO hard to listen to the prompts?
