    ...well, not really.

Background: my apartment complex has some assigned spaces and some unassigned spaces. You're not supposed to park in an assigned space if you don't live in that apartment.

So I'm driving home late at night after hanging out with friends. I pull into my apartment complex behind this other car, no biggie, and follow them in.

But then they pull into my spot. (Guess they thought I didn't live there or wasn't coming home tonight?) I honked at them, and they got the hint and moved... though I had to back halfway down the row for them to park in one of the unassigned spaces...

They should be glad I was right behind them though. If they'd parked in my spot, I'd have had them towed and they'dve been paying to get their car back.

ya cos it sounds like if you hadn't been right there they'd have not cared whose spot they were in

The last two times I have come home to find someone parked in my spot, the people parked there were napping in their cars.

Since there are no towing signs around our complex for a preferred company in my complex, I always just double-park behind them (the lot is big enough and our unit's spaces are just so, so that I can do this without blocking anyone else). They can come explain to me why they can't read the freshly painted unit numbers on each spot if they want to move their car again.

A friend of mine just posted on her FB that 5 months after moving in, she got a text last night telling her to move her car; she's been parking in the wrong park this whole time & nobody told her!

Sweet jumping jesus, I live out in the country so I shouldn't have parking problems ...

someone bought the property that is more or less next to ours, a 44 acre woodlot and decided to build a house. I now have the cops outside ticketing 7, yes SEVEN freaking cars belonging to their work crew, and a 30 yard dumpster.

It isn't as if they can't tell that it isn't part of the guys property, I only have a house, barn and mailbox with the street number on it. Our drive isn't anything like the brand new drive belonging to the new guy. Which is about 20 yards down the road from our drive.

I go out to do a quick shop for milk and flour for making dinner tonight, and come back to a full up yard I have to park down in my close field and use the backup crutches I keep in the car to gently gimp up a very steep hill to get to the house to contact the cops and the local garbage company [luckily I have an account there anyways, and have a contact with them from back when I worked for a waste brokerage. Turns out that the driver was puzzled when the guy directed him to drop the can here as I know the driver and he knows I am not building anything.] The cop just came to the door to let me know that he is hiking down into the building site and informing them they have 10 minutes to move their vehicles, and if they don't he will be calling the local guy to haul the cars away. When he gets back he is getting a freshly made iced frappuccino to sip while he waits!

As in the "new guy" who's building the house? He's directing people to park in your driveway & yard?

That's what I got out of it. He probably doesn't want those "low-brow WORKING MEN" to park in his fancy new driveway.

No clue, but they aren't parking on my property from today going forward.

Yup. I do not foresee good relations with this guy as a neighbor. He was cheesed off when I had the hauler out to remove the can from my yard. I had a lovely discussion with him while the cops were standing there. He was ripping pissed but the cops pointed out that he was trespassing on my property as I *own* this land and he doesn't. He tried to claim that because the previous and now deceased owner had supposedly used my lower driveway to get to his land, he was entitled to use it as an easement. I pointed out that Art had used it once, when the rains had flooded his own driveway to show the woods to the realtor. It was not my fault he bought property that had no street access of it's own until the driveway is finished. Not sure how long asphalt takes to cure.

"Because the previous owner had permission to use her driveway once, I should be able to have my work crew and a huge freaking waste bin on her land!" (Even though he only used it to PASS THROUGH - even if he did it more than once - and this frog licker wants to LEAVE stuff there.)

You should've said: "Sure, but you'll have to pay for the usage!"

                    "BLARAHGAHALHAGLAHGA"

(Also it depends on the asphalt, I believe some of the better stuff only takes a couple days, if that.)

I know there's laws in most places that require people to allow access to the road etc. - BUT that only pertains to lots that are "landlocked" in.

It sounds like he has all the access he needs... he just doesn't want to tear up his own lawn to do it. And somehow thinks that means he has the right to use your property.

I mean maybe if he'd ASKED you in the first place but it sounds like he's gone and fucked himself now by assuming the right.

Even in the case of landlocked lots, the easement only gives the landowner the right to use your land for the purpose of traveling to his land - it doesn't give him the right to dump his crap on it.

Basically, the guy's trying to play the "law" card when he doesn't actually have it in his hand, and is failing epically.

I think even landlocked lots will require the new landowner to negotiate any rights of passage required over others' property; you can't just ignore the rights of pre-existing residents just because you've bought a parcel behind their house.

and since he's in the process of building his own driveway he doesn't sound very landlocked of course.

Just got a call from the court clerk [who is a buddy of mine from way back when we were both in the same paralegal studies program here at UCONN]

The local magistrate just schooled him when he came in to file papers

We need a worlds smallest violin smiley

And apparently he didn't want the can on the property by where he is currently building, he was afraid it would crush the pipes in his leachbed field ... and his crew have to repair the lawn they damaged by driving and parking the 30 yard can on.

I foresee many run-ins with this guy until we sell the place. I am going to have so much fun dusting off my paralegal research skills
