  • Sign says, "Don't look over the fence please!"

    Ok... this happens way too often.

    All around our outside yard we have a very high, wooden fence. It has multiple uses;

    A) Keep doggies in and safe.
    B) Keep doggies from seeing people walking by, freaking out, and causing a doggie riot.

    There are signs on the fence that specifically state;

    "Please don't peek over the fence, you'll cause our dogs to bark! You are more than welcome to go inside, upstairs, and view their cuteness from above!" - with some happy faces.

    It seems like at least once every couple a days I hear a dog bark a warning bark, then a flood of dogs rush the fence, and I spin around to get control of the situation and see some illiterate with their face poking over the fence staring at the dogs.

    Of course I wave my hands and say, "Please duck down or back away from the fence, you're upsetting the dogs!"

    ~Italics are what I was thinking as I simply glared at them~

    "Oh I didn't know~!" (You are literally standing right in front of the sign that tells you not to do it, jerk.)
    "You should have better control of these dogs!" (Did you notice how I managed to get them all to shut up within 5 seconds? You should learn to read better.)
    "I was just trying to check on my dog!" (Wait. You're one of our clients?! We've specifically told you so many times that you need to go to the upstairs viewing room. You have even LESS of an excuse than the "I didn't know" people.)

    Of course, you have the people who do apologize and I can forgive them... still a little angry with them but...

    There is nothing more frustrating than spending a good two hours wrangling all the dogs into good, quiet behavior only to have it completely undone by one person sticking their face over a fence.

    It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

    You actually expect people to read signs???

      The fence is high enough that they have to make an actual EFFORT to see over it.

      Usually lack of sign reading and the after effects are because of a lack of wishing to put any effort forth.

        The problem is that if you specifically tell people NOT to do something, that's the first thing they want to do. Just like a little kid.

            ...Or just some wire on metal bars that stick out from the fence, aimed toward the street. It need not be barbed wire, just something that makes it into a "not worth my while to get up there" situation.

              Until some idiot decides to climb onto the metal bars and instead of sticking just their head over the fence.. it's over the fence they go!

                I vote for the sprinkler on a remote trigger, preferably with a webcam. Idjit sticks their head over and you hear the dogs barking, hit the button and soak em.

                  Theres a demotivational poster floating around the web of a pipe on the surface of a lake, with a sign telling people not to climb on it. And, of course there are 50 people straddling the thing. I believe the caption was something like "Humans summed up in 1 picture". Thought it was apt, but didnt have any luck in finding the pic.
                  Things just get so crazy living life gets hard to do. I would gladly hit the road, get up and go if I knew,that someday it would bring me back to you.

                    Maybe you could have peepholes put into the fence so people can peek but the dogs (hopefully) wouldn't notice.

                    The sign is one thing, but human curiousity is hard to fight; especially when told not to. It's their own damn fault for not following the sign, but more than a few people would want 'just a peek' to see what's on the other side. (I think that's part of the reason why I'm noticing construction site fences often have viewports cut into the wall periodically so people can get over their curious urges safely.)

                          I was walking past the Asylum for the Terminally Bored the other day, and I could hear all the patients shouting: "13....13....13"
                          The fence was too high to see over,but I saw a little gap in the planks and looked through to see what was going on.
                          Some bastard poked me in the eye with a stick.
                          As I walked away rubbing my eye I hear: "14....14....14..."

                              I get that people are curious...

                              but we say "Hey! You're totally welcome to go upstairs in the nice AC and look at ALL the dogs through the window! THERE'S ALSO CANDY IN THERE FOR YOU TO MUNCH ON WHILE YOU WATCH CUTE DOGS!"

                              Yet... over the fence...
