Some of you know that I work in an interesting neighborhood. Most of the crackheads and dealers keep to themselves, so I really don't write much about them. However, you never know what you'll see at the "Square L" on the corner. I usually go outside around lunch to get some exercise, see some trains, and clear my head...as well as get some caffeine

Anyway, as I'm waiting to purchase some caffeinated goodness, I couldn't help but look at some of the people in line. One customer, in particular, stood out. Even though she was dressed in the neighborhood "uniform" (grubby and smelly clothing, unkempt hair), something was a bit off about her. Incoherent ramblings aside, the thing that really set her off...was the bag of doggie treats she was munching on!

She was holding up the line, because she wanted more treats...and Square L doesn't sell them

My understanding is that "Square L" is a chain of convenience stores whose logo (based on their real name) is VERY similar to a symbol used to identify food products certified as Kosher. Do you know of any cases where a sucky customer yelled at the cashier for falsely labeling food because one of their "house brand" products containing ham (or possibly cheese along with some form of meat) was labeled as Kosher?

Hey Milk Bone dog biscuts are quite tasty. I should know, as a young child (5 or so) I got curious and tried them when denied an evening snack. not bad tasting at all.

Those dog snacks that "taste so good dogs don't know they're not bacon" do NOT taste anything like bacon! I'm just sayin'...

I don't think the woman was eating dog biscuits to quit smoking though It wouldn't surprise me if she was uh, smoking something else...and had a serious case of the munchies. Other than Square L, there aren't any other eateries in the neighborhood.

When I used to manage C-stores, I was having problems with one of my stores always being out if stock of some new dog treats our chain had just started carrying.

The manager kept showing me that he was ordering some every week, but the shelf was empty. What was stranger, was that the computer showed that this store was selling more than any other store (but still not enough that they would be close to sold out with ordering some every week).

Then one day, a customer walked up to us and regaled us with how awesome our new beef jerky snacks were. Showed us the box, and there it was, a picture of a big dog in between the Slim Jims and other jerky. We just stood with our mouths open until he left.

"Put that box in the dog food section, and let us never speak of this again."

                  "Okay".

Come to think of it, Mel eats dog food in The Road Warrior as well. What a weird recurring motif.

Admittedly, my MEG (Mental Ex Girlfriend) occasionally used to munch cat treats. Once she dared me to have one, it was not terrible. A little too salty though, and this from one who likes his food well salted.

A recurring motif or a case of real life writing the story?

My older sister used to like milkbones when we were growing up. Used to eat those things well into her teen years. I personally never tried one.

I mean, pet food is still made of food that humans eat, so I don't see any inherent health risks from eating it. It's odd, sure, but everyone eats something that someone else will shudder at (anchovies, oysters, ect.).

While pet food/treats may use ingredients that are also in human food, many do not use ingredients that are deemed safe for human consumption. 4D meat and mouldy grains are considered acceptable for us in pet food, and many of the "big name" companies do use those type of ingredients as they are much cheaper. So, to me most pet treats/pet food is about as safe to eat as seafood that is being sold out of a trunk of a person's car.
