Chromatix, George Carlin did a routine on that very matter.

Side note: every now and then I will sneeze for no reason. I'm not sick, not having an allergy attack, I just sneeze. Dust in the air or something. When this happens at work, I just say to the customers at the bar, "I'm allergic to sobriety. But don't worry....I'll be taking my medicine after my shift!"
I'm allergic to my workplace . . . .even some of my coworkers have the same allergy.

I also have a weird reaction to cinnamon - if I smell it I get a headache, can't stand the flavor either. I would think its just me, but my dad has similar reactions.
You wouldn't want to come to my workplace at the moment; we've got several boxes of those cinnamon pine cones at one end of the registers. And they are strong...I always ask to be placed at the register furthest from them (and I'm not the only one). They smell good, but that many in one place is just too much and gives me a headache after a few minutes.

What I don't like is the number of people who don't believe I don't have a sense of smell. I can taste perfectly fine so I *must* be lying about the other sense.
My sense of smell is really weak due to a car accident I had in 2004. My sense of taste has gotten a bit better over time though. I know how to feel.

Worst allergy incident I've seen was my buddy, at a strip club. Had to tag him with two of his epi-pens and he wound up in the hospital for two days. Nik happens to be allergic to cinnamon and with the cigars we were smoking, neither of us noticed the aroma of cinnamon before it was too late and the cinnamon coated ta-tas were already applied to his face. Fastest allergy I've seen, Nik had time to turn to me and say "oh shit, my aller..." and that's when his throat closed up. Thankfully, he carries a man-purse with his epipens and other meds.

When he was working at DaddyJim's Pizza, he found out -- again, the hard way -- that he is allergic to the powder commonly used inside latex gloves. They ordered powder-free gloves for his use, and then he discovered that he was *also* allergic to the latex itself >_< made it kinda hard to work the makeline, especially seeing as how touching certain foods like peppers made him break out in a rash, too.
Normally the powder in latex gloves is just cornstarch or talc - both fairly innocuous allergy wise. The normal problem is the powder gets covered in latex proteins and then puff all over the place when you put the gloves on (especially bad as it's easy to breathe it in)

It's great to hear that I'm not the only one with allergies people don't believe in... for my it's tobacco. Makes working in casinos interesting, but I also have always worked in non-smoking portions of the building (when I was front desk, it was a non-smoking lobby, and since then have always worked back of house). I can handle the smell of tobacco without too much problem, but the smoke itself will give me a massive migraine and too much will cause me to pass out (this is why I prefer to gamble at the Atlantis, their high ceilings and excellent ventilation keep smoke from building up, unlike say the Peppermill that has amazing restaurants but is seriously a mad dash across the casino to avoid suffocating).

The stupid guy says "Hey man, I got pot in my bag but I didn't smoke it. I smoked out in the courtyard like you said on check in"
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it still illegal no matter where he smoked it (I'm assuming it is illegal where you're at), right? Yeah, good defense for Mr. Stupid Guy...

it's illegal, but if the hotel says they don't care if you smoke pot in the courtyard, then it's morally wrong for the hotel to then call the cops on you for smoking pot in the courtyard, due to the deception. It's not a legal defense, but it IS a good reason to avoid the hotel in future.

I was also allergic to my workplace, as were many co-workers. I worked with lots of old paper files. Many of us were allergic to paper dust, actually the paper mites that made the paper dust. I haven't had a problem with it since I retired.

Normally, yes. But there are exceptions. I once had a head chef who had an allergy to corn. Which means, of course, he not only had to avoid corn, but all corn products, including high fructose corn syrup, which is in a LOT of things these days. It also meant we ended up getting non-coated latex gloves for his run with us. Upside: none of that white powdery stuff that gets everywhere. Downside: slightly harder to put on those gloves. Upside for him: no ambulance.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that, in all probability, the hotel staff told him that, if he was going to smoke, to do so in the courtyard, and not that he could smoke pot in the courtyard. Just a guess.....

In my old workplace the turn of the 20-century ventilation spewed dust to the point that I had to wash my glasses a couple times per shift. Also there were curtains that seemed to be more dust than textile.

I also seem to be developing some sort of reaction to latex. This is a very bad thing. I'm not sure if it's an allergy, but I do plan on going back to my allergist as soon as my insurance company says I can.
I think latex is one of those things where a sensitivity can be exacerbated by repeated exposure. It didn't used to bother me much, but for awhile I had a job where I had to put latex gloves on all the time. Now it's much worse when I'm in contact with it, I get a rash.

I'm also apparently allergic to hypoallergenic surgical tape. Either that or they didn't actually use the "hypoallergenic" one on me.

Yeah, its illegal, but we can't stop them if we don't know about it. If we catch them, we WILL throw them out. But we do allow people to smoke regular cigarettes in the courtyard. Personally, I think the whole property should be non-smoking period but the owner has overridden that idea. I also think we should not be a pet friendly hotel but don't have a choice in that either because the owner has decided that we are a pet friendly hotel.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the discomfort I'm experiencing is a developing allergy or just another thing that my fair skinned/red-headed self is sensitive to. I generally can't use bandaids or other medical tapes either. The adhesives usually cause blisters. It sucks.

Since everybody's doing it - I'm allergic to equines! Yep, horses, mules, and donkeys so far.
That's a bad one for anyone in retail - if you're allergic to horses, then you must be allergic to horses' asses, and I'm sure everyone here knows how often you encounter those.
