We have a very Italian last name and my 11 year old daughter with blonde hair and blue eyes is tired of hearing how she doesn't look Italian.

My little guy has been made fun of because of his red hair and freckles. OMG! He looks Irish!
Not picking, just using this as a means of example...

I was just reading on Wikipedia yesterday that almost every nationality has been known to have redheads, the UK obviously topping the list, but even people from Asia and India, etc. can and do.
    I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

Oh, and your tool box called...you got out again.

Red hair is usually inherited, but apparently it can also manifest as a genetic "defect", which is why there are redheads the world over in every culture.

A very desirable defect, I think.

The CFO here is part native American and she has some of the features of what people stereotypically assume all native American's have. She has thick dark hair, a dark complexion, and a slightly large-ish nose. She got stopped when leaving the hospital with her daughter, who is pale skinned and blond.

Other than being overweight, (I have an hourglass figure... there's just too much sand) I don't really have any outstanding features, except that I like my hair long. I get people encouraging me to do stuff with it all the time. They can't quite fathom that I like having my hair the color and style it is naturally.

How can red hair be considered a "defect"?

I doubt any box of hair dye or any mixture at a swanky salon can make the beautiful color of natural red hair, like my mother's when she was younger. Sure, you can get some pretty neat shades of red, brown, burgundy and whatnot, but nothing like the real thing.

Whoever said it was a "defect" was just jealous. Wasn't here an entire redhead movement in the early 1900's in France? All pieces of art I have seen have seen from that era are of women with red hair......perhaps it was dyed, maybe it was natural.......

Just like most people say that blonde hair is a handicap

            To quote from Wikipedia:

Red hair appears in people with two copies of a mutated gene on chromosome 16 which causes a change in the MC1R protein.

I have ran into the same thing when a clerk looked at my credit card and saw my last name. I was pregnant with my little guy at the time, so I told her I had a little Italian in me at the moment while patting my stomach.

Heh! My hubby is red-haired, freckled...and Dutch. His entire family (siblings) is brown-haired and hazel- or brown-eyed. None of his three sons has red hair. It skips generations; he had a grandmother and a great-grandfather with red hair. And I happen to think red hair and freckles are quite special.

Neat story: there's an old photo of his great-grandfather, posing with a bicycle and wearing knee pants and a newsboy's cap, taken in the teens or 20s of the last century. It's a dead ringer for my hubby.

Red hair runs on Dad's side of the family. It's odd, because if you look at my hair closely, it's mostly brown, but there are quite a few reddish hairs in there, along with a few blond ones. They're nearly all hidden by the brown.

It's a scientific term in this sense; sort of a genetic "burp". Geneticists don't differentiate between defects with bad outcomes (like Down's Syndrome) and defects with good or neutral outcomes (like red hair).

You should ask some of these people what Italians look like. Yes, the Italians on TV are swarthy. However, it is far from rare to find blond haired, blue eyed Italians. In the northern part of the country, that's pretty normal.

I really don't get my daughter's coloring. We are both of light olive skin, dark brown hair. My hair is dark brown. Husband's is jet black.

The baby has light, bronze colored brown hair, and eyes that I think are going to be blue green. She is pale as Snow White. I can only think she got the eyes from my father, which was a long shot...he's very dark, with jet black hair. But his eyes are ice blue. The hair I just can't explain.

                        She sure is pretty, though.

Remember, in genetics you get two genes for each expression, and when you have a kid you pass on one of those two.

Generally, dark hair tends to be a dominant gene, so if a person has a light hair gene from one parent and a dark hair gene from the other, then that person will have dark hair. However, if that person has a kid and the kid gets the light hair gene from them and a light hair gene from the other parent, then the kid will have light hair even though both parents have dark hair.

In a simple equation of a single gene pairing, you have a 25% chance of getting any particular outcome. So, for two parents who had 1 dominant dark hair gene and 1 recessive light hair gene each, there is a 25% chance of the child having both recessive genes and having light hair, and a 25% chance of the child having both dominant genes and having dark hair. That leaves a 50% chance of the child having one dominant and one recessive and so having dark hair, but being a carrier of the recessive light hair gene.

She is 20 months old. My husband's dad has light colored hair, but no one on my side does. Unless you go back a couple generations. Eyes I can understand. My immediate family has literally all color eyes (but myself and all the other relatives have brown).

It might darken up but I would almost swear it's getting LIGHTER, if anything! Now, her eyes were deep slate blue when she was born, and they've warmed up to a wierd, blueish hazel color that is really georgeous.

A friend told me to start laying in the guns and ammo now.

I'm 5'3 1/2" and regularly climb the shelves to get things down. However, customers rarely comment on my hight, as I am one of the taller workers at my store. It is my family who won't let my lack of height go. GRRRR
