    Racial slur aimed at Hispanics. I think it originated from the fact that Hispanics do a lot of manual labor such as picking vegetables and their backs would get all sweaty.
    I rather believe that it's referring to them crossing the Rio Grande by swimming to arrive in the states. That's no longer the preferred method of getting to the states, but the term remains.

    (Now the favored way is crossing the border in the California/Arizona area. Frequently in the middle of high summer. In Arizona. Maybe New Mexico. No, I don't understand the logic either.)

      Racism over here can result in tens of thousands of dollars fine. Does America not have similar penalties?

      You also have your right to refuse service and/or call a manager.

        Bingo. Also can be used to refer to Cubans and such who have come into Florida.

          That's the other explanation I heard, and it doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't your entire body be wet then?

            Illegal alien. Aimed typically at those of Mexican descent.
            That term makes me roll my eyes, last I checked the Rio Grande usually doesn't get that deep....

              Not if individuals do it, so long as they're not inciting violence. The first ammendment to our constitution (the freedom of speech one) includes all speech, even stuff most people don't like or want to hear.

              Corporations do have the ability to refuse service based on racism (along with other things). If racism is directed at their employees, there's more incentive to do it, since otherwise the employees can complain about their work environment. Public corporations can't engage in racist activities legally, though I'm not sure about the rules for privately owned businesses.

                    A more common term now is "FOB." It's short for Fresh Off the Boat, and extended to Fresh Over the Border. But it's used as a rude equivalent of noob or newb. Latinos call them "wet ones" in Spanish.

                      I signed up a middle aged couple, and they were really nice through most of the transaction. They commented on how our Gaithersburg location was getting very crowded, and I said it's because the city is MUCH much bigger than the Frederick region.

                      They proceed to tell me because it's "all these damn immigrants" moving into the area. I was shocked, but I proceeded with my comeback!

                      Me= "Well, personally, I like that immigrants are coming into the area."
                      SC= "You're serious?!?!"
                      Me= "Oh yeah, I can tell you that most people from different countries are often the most polite in here. They say thank you every time, shake my hand, etc."
                      SC= "Really?"
                      Me= "I can't tell you how many times I get yelled at a day over here, and it's almost always an born American. We can be quite a rude group."
                      SC= "That sounds absolutely true, you're right about that."

                        Wow, you sure? even verbal abuse is legal?

                        Too bad I can't say my own country is free of racism as there have been anti-muslim rallys in Sydney. What I don't get is, aren't we all human?

                        In this case, the employee should have refused service, as serving them (or even not replying) could make them think it's acceptable.

                        OMG BeckySunshine... Where do you people find all those cool smilies?

                          I work in an office in a warehouse. Not surprisingly, the majority of the warehouse staff is of Mexican or South/Central American heritage, and you don't hear much English on the warehouse floor, and even less in the cafeteria during their breaks.

                              Depends on how abusive it is, and how it's done. Saying racist things in general isn't a crime. Saying them in such a way that it can be considered assualt (IE, "personal terrorism") is a crime.

                                From what I understand it also depends on how specifically targetted the comments are. Saying something about all nonspecific members of a race is protected generally, saying that one particular person who is a member of that race is generally considered libel or slander.

                                That unfortunately is how the KKK, Neo Nazis, and all the other hate groups operate. By tap dancing on that line so thin.....
