once again, my lack of faith in our species is reinforced; not only did they choose to overlook reality, but the fact that the reality had affected you and your coworkers completely.

heads up their nethers? certainly; in fact, up there so far, they cannot be retracted. no hopes for them.

once again, kus, you still managed to show restraint in a situation, in which most (including me) would have told them to get the F* out and to take their damned money with them.

sorry that your store is a magnet for humanity's trash.

It's true: disaster brings out the best and the worst in people. You've got the heroes, the healers, the generous givers...and you have the opportunists, the sluggards and the self-centered arrogant s.

I'm very sorry you had to deal with three of the worst. Your restraint is admirable; I think I would've picked up a nearby lamp/vase/tchotchke and rammed it into one end and out the other of those SCs!

Kus, I might have to agree with your coworker. That was pretty hot.

I will never, ever understand how people's brains can work like that. Major disaster? Not important if it inconveniences me. What a bunch of asshats.

Hello, sucky customer. I want to play a game.

Throughout your dealings with customer service representatives, you have resorted to empty threats and intimidation to get the results you want, regardless of their legality or potential for the representative's termination. Some would call you a leech, an opportunist, a cheat. I call you a stain on the face of humanity...but I'm prepared to give you a chance to redeem yourself.

The device you are wearing is attached to your ears, your mouth, and your eyes. Although I know you'd like to save all three of these senses, the fact is that you can only save one. You will have sixty seconds to decide which is more important to you--your sight, your hearing, or your speech. If you cannot decide, the device will detonate, thus rendering your efforts all for naught.

Live or die, sucky customer--make your choice.

I just received a call from a customer who lives in San Diego. He wanted to know the status on an order that he had placed a few weeks back. I happened to remember seeing a tracking slip with his name on it, and pulled the stack of tracking sheets out. While I was flipping through, looking for his, I made a comment on the fires, and especially the Witch Fire.

He told me that he lives about 1/4 mile from where the Witch Crick Fire (Witch Crick is what he says the area's called) started, and that he managed to save his house and outbuildings before evacuating.

His package left our building a week ago today - and it was delivered 40 minutes ago. He was, thankfully, quite understanding about the delivery delay.

These people represent why I harbor so much hatred towards humanity in general. Sorry you had to deal with them, Kus, your actions were fully acceptable. I'd have done the same (actually, I'd have been screaming at the woman who came in the store).

We dealt with this kind of BS when Katrina hit. We had employees who had lost their homes, stores that didn't even exist anymore, and of course, a devastated network in the affected area. But I'd get those calls about how ridiculous it was that we couldn't provide service because they were waiting for an important business call or how could we not have service in an outlying area from New Orleans that didn't take the full-force of the hurricane, and how much are we going to credit them for not having service while they were in the area providing disaster relief, and blah blah blah.

Meanwhile, I'm getting calls from people crying because they wanted to be able to hear a lost family member's voicemail greeting one last time or crying because their home, all their belongings, and their entire life have been taken from them and could we please give them more time to pay the bill (of course we did), and calls from store reps who, not having a store anymore, were still calling customer care to get new phones for customers who had lost theirs, and also from people crying tears of thanks that our engineering team was already working their asses off trying to get things back up and running so they had enough service to let their families know they were okay.

It was those people who kept me sane against all the pretentious assholes trying to take advantage of a situation that barely affected them directly.

For those people who haven't been keeping up on the figures, and don't know or understand the damage: The Witch Fire, indisputably the worst of the fires, has destroyed almost 200 thousand acres of land, and over 1000 homes.

There are other fires all down Southern California, mostly in San Diego and Los Angeles counties. Many of the fires are relatively small, with minor damage, but all told, there have been at least 35 discrete fires, with a total damage somewhere near a million acres, and between 3000 and 5000 houses destroyed.

I used to work in the cruise industry and one of our busiest ports was New Orleans. Well I worked at said company during Katrina. You think there was patience and understanding from our customers? I have all too many stories just like these and worse, and I can't even recont them lest I end up chucking the computer monitor out the window for recalling the incredulty when I had to, like Kusangi, experience the absolute worst sociopathy of the American consumer first-hand. Some people are just in need of a slow, wicked death. And God help me, I've met a few.

Good Lord. There are no words for those...I don't even know what to call them.

I'm up in Idaho and we had a large fire right on our doorsteps back in August -- I mean, if the firefighters hadn't gotten here when they did, the town probably would have been gone -- and a lot of businesses ended up closing for a few days, including where I work. I can't fathom getting those kinds of responses; when I told people we were closing because of the fire (smoke and they wanted us off the road, there's one road into town and that's it!) they were totally understanding.

I recommend going off on those people. I don't know how you didn't scream at all three. You are a better human than I am! If somebody had gotten an attitude with me, they would have gotten it back and then some -- and I bet my boss would have understood.

It's a good thing I wasn't working when this happened. I have a very, very short fuse. I would have wound up in a screaming match with these assholes.
