  • why oh why (quickie vent)

Why is it that people think that because they are only staying a few hours they should pay a lower rate? Do they not understand for them to stay a few hours we still have to take the room out of inventory for the whole night? And most important of all... why must I receive nearly a dozen of those tonight?

... Uh... this isn't that kind of place (right?!). If you want to rent rooms by the hour you'll need to find that part of town....

Especially since you titled this "quickie"

Probably because they don't understand that you have to take the room out of circulation all night. It seems perfectly logical that you shouldn't have to pay the whole rate, 'cause your not using the whole service. That is, until you stop and think about it. Of course, if the keep complaining once you explain it to them, they deserve .

Just ask them if they think they should pay less for an apple pie if they don't eat the whole thing.

Thank you. I feel a little better knowing I have company in the gutter. My friends from college would be so proud of the levels of debauchery that my mind jumps to from innocently intended statements. They have trained me well.

I will forever be confused at people who want a cheaper rate cuz it's 11pm...during busy times I have actually said, "Someone else will be willing to pay the full price." I have had people come back...to no rooms. They insist on getting mad at the desk person.

On more than one occasion, I have been passing through town to another and if there were no rest stops on the highway to park and sleep I would look for a hotel for a few short hours of sleep....the bonus thing about that vs. sleeping in my car was the shower I could take before I left. (Road trips can make you stinky)

I didn't want to look for a hotel "in that part of town" - but nor would I demand a lower rate because I was only using the room for a few hours. I am still messing up the bed, using the television, the shower, and quite possibly the phone...so why would I want a discount rate????

I would say, "oh, you want a discount for staying for a few hours? Well, if you don't mind using a bar of soap that's already open, and sleeping in a wet spot, sure!"

There was once when my friend & I stopped to get a room at 2 am. She had just gotten too tired to drive any more, at least safely. To our surprise, they gave us a discount on the room. It was an itty-bitty next to a truck stop motel, and to this day, I'm not certain why, unless it was pity.
I'm sorry, the person to whom you were speaking has been replaced by a recording. Please leave your message at the sound of the beep.

Could have had something to do with the fact it was 2am, too. And I wouldn't be surprised if places like that next to truck stops do stuff like that?

For years, there was one of "those" motels just off I-70 in Washington, PA. It proudly advertised the rate for couples. And yes, it was a skeevy-looking place. It's since been knocked down, and (IIRC) a Bob Evans restaurant is there now.

well, if it's 2am when you are calling most likely you will be actually speaking to someone at the hotel rather than to little ole me in the central office and that person may actually be willing to nearly give the room awayh rather than see it sit empty... if you are still reaching me there is a very good chance that we will get someone calling in who isn't staying just a few hours and will pay full rate...
