The Subway Rants Chronicles (VERY Long and language warning)
I go to the local Subway every other week, when I need to bring a lunch to my job. Good solid meal, a lot better than just "burgers and fries".
One thing I don't understand is why stores don't invest in those ropes and posts that they use at the bank to 'guide' people to the start of the line. At the local Subway, there's a table that's just too close to the Start, and you sometimes see people talking and trying to eat while there's a guy in the line STANDINGRIGHTNEXTTOYOULISTENINGTOYOURCONVERSTATION ANDWATCHINGYOUEAT!!!
Oh, and if I may become an SC for a moment: They call you Subway artists... does that mean the price of the subs goes up if you die?
(I know, I know, I know... I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I had to ask...)
i worked at a subway... all those things happened to me at some point in my rather short 4-month employment there...
i remember once, during a heatwave, our air conditioner broke. Now, i was wearing the only uniform shirt they had given me - a winter-weight, heavy cotton one - during lunch rush - by myself, another story later there - while making bread. Now, I should point out that this was *the* hottest day of the year (32C in the shade), i was wearing winter-weight cotton, *and* I was making bread.. inside a store that registered 31C. By myself with a lineup of about, oh, two dozen people. Literally dripping sweat, doing my best not to drip on the subs i'm making.
anyway, the quick note of the manager from Assholeville who left me alone just about every single day during rush... his excuse was that he was "going for change" at the bank. A trip that should take all of 20 minutes... always took him 3 hours. and he had a car. the bank was at the end of the block. i could walk the distance between bank and store in just under 8 minutes. i should know. i used to work at the car wash between the two.
yeah, he got fired shortly after that. and bumped me to supervisor... though no higher pay, and stupid hours. well, i think thats enough rant for today, i have to get up in four hours. pleh.
So, yeah, Tigress, i feel your pain. I have been there.
Voldine's post reminds me of the other spectrum of why Subway sucks so bad. It's not only the customers, the management can be just as bad if not worse at times.
It's a serious case of you vs SCs or you vs spineless sucky management. Either way you lose.
Ahh, Subway. I remember the few months I spent in your minimum wage hellhole. Heck, the franchisee of the store I applied at and was hired for owned five in the area at the time, and I was constantly shuffling between two stores. One right near a local speedway/racetrack and the other a couple towns away, next to a 'Gentleman's club'. I ALMOST wish I could say I had the figure to have been told to apply there instead, but I digress.
I've seen my fair share of SC's, SCW's and SM's when I was working at Subway. I had a natural talent for braiding so guess who always got to make the 'party bread' all the time? Hell, I did it so often in just four months that I still braid things that way. Definitely makes Twizzlers Pull'n'peel more entertaining though.
SC's that don't understand that they cannot place an order for a 10AM pickup of two 6-foot party subs at 6PM the night before, in part because we already have a party platter of Deli-style sandwiches scheduled for a 10AM pickup? Too often to count. For starters that means pulling extra dough out to the fridge to thaw, and there may not be enough room to do this. Secondly there was NEVER anyone scheduled before 8AM and never more than one scheduled before 10.
SCW that decides to give all 'exotic dancers' a free sandwich if they lift their shirts or otherwise expose themselves....while working with me and without being able to tell if they actually are employed as such all the time. (Was apparently fired a week after I quit when one of the dancers complained to management the next day.
SM's that tell you to take the phone order for 50 sandwiches, all foot-longs, and then didn't want to listen to you say that you had no bread left.
There's a reason most Wal-Marts have a Subway in them now people. Associate!
I could never understand why people got so upset about their sandwhiches, its JUST a sandwhich!
there is way too much anger in this world when someone freaks out over a sandwhich!
Trust me, it boggles my mind as well. A sandwich apparently has the power to revert full grown adults back to their toddler maturity and behavior in public.
I havent had a subway in Canada yet, I used to get them fairly often in NZ but they got more and more expensive suddenly my $4 sandwhich was $7 and I just couldn justify that anymore.
Then I would just get it as a treat but they changed the bread... I dont know what they did to it, but it went from being fresh tasting soft tender bread to this over dried crumbly day old tasting crap.

My biggest pet peeve as a customer.....the idiots who walk in and don't understand the concept of "The line starts HERE" and as I'm beginning to order my sub, someone wanders in, goes up to the register, and yells "IWANNAFOOTLONGHAMONHONEYOAT!"
Yep, that happens quite often. It's highly irritating because we even have signs hanging that says where to start and where to pay.

The first experience I ever had with Subway was in Edmonton (about 6 years ago when I visited my mother's clone in Canuckistan). I was still on my vegetarian kick at the time - and the server was super cute *drool*
We have a couple of Subways in South Africa...I like the idea of building your own sandwich, but as far as I have seen, the majority of SAfricans are pretty good at listening and saying "yes, I want whole wheat, with mozarella and rosa tomatoes thanks".
Yeowch. That's gotta suck. Digitalpotato, yes, we did have pineapple on our subs for quite some time, although I never had it...made the ham too weird.
And dammit, now you've made me crave a chicken fillet sub
