Quite a few of the bars in my area will do them, although most of them will want to hold onto your credit card or your drivers license. One of the places I go to doesn't even ask me for that, although I think they only do that for people they know.
Yeah, I was kind of curious about that .... who would even trust a tab to some random person off the street (especially after they throw a tissy fit like that)?
This area is left blank for a reason.

See, here (canada) any bar i've been to. Starting a tab is no problem but you have to leave a credit card or drivers lisence with the bartender looking after your tab.

This way you aren't leaving without paying

That's what they did at the bar Ex and I used to frequent. They didn't take a card from us because he was there all the time, but non-regulars (and it was a hotel bar so there were plenty) had to provide a card or room number if they were staying at the hotel.

At my old job we had a non-customer who ordered a pair of sneakers. She received an email and phone call letting her know her CC did not go through. She spoke to her bank and learned it was due to insufficient funds. She spent the next week talking to supervisors over and over to try and get us to send the sneakers for free due to the inconvenience and the fact she was a "good" customer. She had no order history ever.
You know, if I had a customer that orders every other week from me and has this happen to him, I would probably do it for him and then just deduct the money on the next order. But those people are good customers and they won't something like that happen in the first place.
