SC: Hey can you tell me how to activate cheat X in this PS3 game? I can't figure it out.
Me: I have never played that game before sir, I don't know how to do that.
SC: Can't you look it up for me?
MeWhat am I, your damned servant?) No I can't sir, we sell cheat code books, you're welcome to come and buy one.
SC: I'm not going to buy a whole book for one damned code! Why can't you just give it to me? It'll take you two seconds.
Me: We SELL codes here, we do not give them away. If you want them for free, try Google.
    SC: Whatever! <click>
XD So instead of going online and looking it up, which would have probably took him a minute or two, he instead wastes his minutes calling a store? *Sigh* What a moron.

I also do some hiring, and yes, a person's appearance when asking about that application matters. It doesn't have to be fancy. Jeans and a t shirt is actually just fine. But I couldn't tell you the number of people that come into inquire about jobs that just look SLOPPY. There is a world of difference between clean jeans in good condition and a neat, appropriate t shirt, and ratty, worn out jeans riding too low and a garish, sloppy t. I don't want to see midriff or excessive cleavage, and for the love of god, comb your hair.

We do our applications online, so I don't fit those first impressions to applications in general. But it might mean the difference between me chatting someone up and getting a feel for them, and maybe asking thier name so I can look out for thier app, rather than it going into the pile of dozens that come through each week.

In interviews, it's even more important to look nice. But there's going too far. Show up to a coffee shop interview in a sharp suit and polished shoes, and I might wonder if maybe you take yourself too seriously, or if you'll be ok doing the grubby parts of this job. I have interviewed people that were too uptight and too gung ho about wanting to move up to managment asap when all we need is a solid team member. Those people always showed up to the interview overdressed. I need to be able to picture you in our store uniform doing the work we do.

Overdressed is better than underdressed. But in the end it all comes down to knowing what kind of job you're applying for and wearing clothes appropriate for that place.
My webcomic is called Sidekick Girl. Val's job is kinda like retail, except instead of corporate's dumb policies, it's the Hero Agency, and the SC's are trying to take over the world.

Whoa, they removed backwards-compatibility from the PS3? Buh? I mean, I'm still planning to buy one...Kingdom Hearts 3 is gonna come out eventually...but damn, that sucks just a little bit.

Well, the PS2 is still getting a lot of games, especially of the RPG type.
Ah yes, the Shin Megami series comes to mind, not to mention a lot of other Atlus games.

Which reminds me...[fires up PS2 and Persona 4]

note: I'd rather play my Persona games than the 360 games I have (Soul Caliber, Halo, COD)

            - I'm looking for a game that has a guy with long hair on the cover. (Needle in a haystack dude...needle in a haystack...)
Is it blue? Seriously, I thought it was just us bookstore folks who got that question...

I've read that for an interview, you should look at how the employees are dressed and go a notch or two nicer. You'll look professional and also look like you'll fit into the environment.

What do you mean? It got mostly good reviews... and it was a good game.

But I haven't actually found those. Maybe they had a No-Sphere-Grid-No-Tidus-version.

Really? I mean, the previous quote about your boxers hanging down is fine; those people look stupid anyway, but do I really need a shirt and slacks or a suit to waltz into a gamestop and pick up an application?
You don't "need" it, but really, is it that hard to go home and change first? It shows a level of maturity and commitment. Like some have said, a suit is overdoing it, but tidy casual at least, not sporty/trendy casual.

At worst, you never know if it's the hiring manager who handed you that piece of paper.

Also find out before you walk in and ask for an app if the store does them on-line. Cause we do write down everyone's name who walks in and asks for an app. And I vote NO on every single one who asks for an app in person, cause it is a simple on-line search at our web site to find the employment link. If you are too stupid to do that, I don't want to work with you. It shows you are lazy cause everyone of them gives a cattbutt face when we say we do them on-line ONLY. "did you think I was going to fill out the app for you? Or that you were special that you could apply in person?" Nope don't want to work with you if you can't do that little bit of research on your own, means I am going to have to hold your hand through every move we make on the sales floor.. FAIL

At least shower and have clean clothes. And we get lots of kids from the highschool and this is a don't. Don't ever come in with your cheerleader girlfriends and try to pick up an application in your schools cheerleader uniform. We know right then and there we will not hire you since you will do nothing but screw around with your friends when you work an after school shift.. We did it once and our shrink sky rocketed when she worked... Never again if we can help it..

Uh, ouch. Yeah, it may be a simple search, but if it's a store I'm close to, or go to regularly, I'd be inclined just to grab an app while I'm passing by. If I was applying to a retail location, I'd assume that they'd have some form of on-premises way to apply, either a kiosk or paper apps. Even the store near me that does only do online has a huge-ass display "Wanna work here? Apply online! Take a pamphlet of information with you!" And it almost smacks you in the face when you walk in.

Don't assume. Yeah ouch I have a slightly tough standard, but I want people who are smart enough to take some initiative. And if you are a regular in our store you should have noticed that we do not have a kiosk. And for paper apps, you should have checked out the linky on-line. Its called due diligence(sp?) You want to know as much about a company as you can learn so you can talk to the person doing the interview it shows you want to make it a better place to work since you took the time to go out on your own and learn something rather "how many hours will you give me and how much is my discount?"= Fail... Which is what we see most often. Show us something different and odds are we will hire you.

No offense, but it's a retail job. Not a Fortune 500 CEO position. If the place is going to be anal enough that it's a one-strike and you're out just to interview there, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't wanna work there. Yeah, each job has its own little quirks, but those aren't anything you'll be learning on a website. Most websites put so much spin on their workplaces, you drown in bullshit. If I wanna learn about a company and how it really is, the last place I'm going is somewhere they have total control and are actually paying to have the information there. Whereas the best way is to basically case the joint. Go in, observe the workers. What are they doing? What's their attitude? What kind of condition is the place in? How busy does it seem? Those are the things I want to know. And if asking a five second question gets me on a shitlist just because I'd actually liked what I'd seen and decided to ask then, rather than go home to find out that I have to go back for a paper app, then obviously the place's mentality is a little too strict for my liking, and managers are more likely to be powertrippers, employees are likely to be ridden hard (Show some initiative! Why are you only doing one thing at a time?! Why are you asking questions! Figure it out yourself!), so I guess I should be thankful that you're saving me from a crap job.

Yeah I'm with BJ there. It's retail for crying out loud. It's selling stuff in a shop. It's not something you should do some serious research over. Nothing more intensive than "what would this job likely involve" and "what is appropriate dress for this job".

Maybe, just maybe, I could see a preference for those that had bothered to find out about the online apps, but automatically discarding anyone who walked in instead? A bit OTT.

Obviously it's an employer's market there just now.

*eyetwitch* I am a cave dweller of the worst kind, so I know almost nothing about popular culture. Even I know that Mario is a huge Nintendo mascot.

Who are these people and how do they escape this knowledge?
After doing a quick perusal of the internet, I have discovered an emulator that will let the user run old Nintendo ROMs on a PSP. I'd be willing to bet some local kid has it on his, someone saw it, and word, however muddled, got out.

What I am asking is job search 101 basics. Any place that teaches you how to find a job will tell you this be it retail or a fortune 500 company. Bullshit or not, if you found out some of the basics of our company like which companies are under our umbrella brands then it shows me you at least took some time to learn about it. I'm not a boss, but I am listened to by the bosses about people and hiring. And you know the caliber of people we have started to get has been better and more responsible. They show up on time, can learn the job and get it done right. Nothing more than I ask of myself.
