Gotta say Cookiesaur - I'm always more impressed with people who have DECIDED to live here (with all the work and hassle that entails) than many of those who "strove" to be born here.
Hopefully you and the Hubs are now at the laughing rather than the anger stage at this buffoon. A threat emptier and more willfully malicious than the usual SC's "I'll get you fired!" And striking through a spouse as well. Sad.
huh. Went over it again and missed the part where the Cookiesaur said this was an american. Is it only citizens of my country who behave this poorly? Or are there asshats everywhere?Quoth calulu View PostHow very Ugly American of him! Sorry you're going through this.
My wife and I got married when I was 39 and she 36. She kept her family name. It was just too much hassle at that point - bills, insurance, trusts, etc. etc. I've got no ego tied up in it, so...Quoth Can I Help Your A$$? View PostDoes no one think it a bit absurd to be a "maiden" at age 37, and suddenly drop it and become Mrs. His First Name/His Last Name? Well, it is to me.
Also, it really seems LESS suspicious (Homeland Security-wise) for someone to retain their name to me. I mean, marrying and getting that new citizenship AND new name seems like it has the potential to cover up a lot of past.....

At this point if I ever get married I would have to keep my last name, otherwise things would just get too confusing. My legal name is First, Middle, Mother Maiden-Father's Last Name. But I go by First Mother's Maiden Name. (It was the 70's, she also has the same last name as me.) My kids are First, Middle, their father's last name, My mother's maiden name. Are you confused? Don't worry, so am I.

lol, I changed my name two weeks into my first semester of ROTC. Most school ROTC files have me as my new last name, but a lotta DOD stuff still has me as my first last name...so I'm sure there will be joy-joy times throughout my military career because of this.
And...I'm pretty sure the wording is now, "Mr. and Mrs. [his first name] [her first name] [last name]." At least, that's how it was @ my uncle's wedding last week...

Paw-sta? Mare-e-o?Quoth CrazedClerkthe2nd View Post
In Canada we use long As, so instead of Paw-sta we say Pass-ta, instead of Mare-e-O (as in the Nintendo mascot), it's Mar-E-O.
Get out of the South before your brain melts. We pronounce both of those words the right way here in Connecticut.
Next thing you'll be saying 'witchadija' is a real word.

Beavis and Butthead are not role models, they're not even human, they're cartoons, some of the things they do could cause a real person to get hurt, expelled or possibly deported, to put it another way, don't try this at home.
- They say nothing good happens at 2AM, they're right, I happen at 2AM.

Even if your paperwork and marriage weren't so solid, it wouldn't matter. One of my oldest and dearest friends used to work for Immigration as a lawyer. Her very job was to analyze files of marriages of foreigners to Americans to see if they were legit or not. And she made it really clear to me that some douchebag calling up Immigration and ratting someone out really would not have any effect on how they do things. They have plenty on their plate already, and get crackpot calls all the time...they have neither the time nor the manpower to go investigating every call they get about some foreigner that's here.Quoth Cookiesaur View PostSo then the guy leans in close, and whispers, "Give me the refund or I'll call immigration and tell them your wife needs to be deported."
This is, of course, an empty threat. My paperwork and my marriage is watertight.
And the fact that you ARE solid with your paperwork and your marriage is just that much better. His threat, whether he knew it or not, was emptier than his head. Which is a feat in itself.
I don't think the age has anything to do with it. If you want to take his name, great. If you don't, fine. It's 2009. Big flippin' deal. I know when I was engaged, my fiance had no intention of taking my last name. My opinion of that? Fine by me. I wanted her to be HAPPY. I could give two shits about someone taking my name. I have it. Why do I need her to have it? So, if it works for you to keep your name, awesome. If it works for you to take his name, great. But I don't really see it as an age thing. Maybe that's just me though.Quoth Can I Help Your A$$? View PostDoes no one think it a bit absurd to be a "maiden" at age 37, and suddenly drop it and become Mrs. His First Name/His Last Name? Dunno, what tends to be a giveaway for the Canadians I know personally are the stereotypical "aboot" and "eh" usages. One guy I knew even went "ow" with a Canadian accent.
Me being out west, I have a habit of saying "Ah dunno" instead of "I dunno", but I have relatives out of state who drink "cawffee".

Witchadija is a terrible word.Quoth Voldine View PostNext thing you'll be saying 'witchadija' is a real word.
Just don't knock 'y'all'. I will continue using y'all until I come across a better second person plural for the English language.
Though if people start making a big thing out of it(and people have), I start randomly dropping vous and Sie in at random where necessary.Character flaws aren't a philosophy -Scott Adams

Hate to break it to you, but last time I checked, 'y'all' = you (singular) and 'all y'all' = you (plural)...Quoth Drakstern View Post

EDIT: Oh god.. I'm arguing the proper usage of redneck slang. I never thought I'd sink to this level."I'm working for popcorn - what I get paid doesn't rise to the level of peanuts." -Courtesy of Darkwish

My name is Joe, and I am Canadian! (Classic Canadian commercial)
I must admit that I do end sentences with "eh" on occasion. And I do pronounce it "zed", not "zee". Other than that, I can think of no other Canadian-isms that I might use.
Other than being polite, that is. Had a few tourists comment about how polite people are "up here".Last edited by El Pollo Guerrera; 03-11-2009, 05:46 AM."Kamala the Ugandan Giant" 1950-2020 • "Bullet" Bob Armstrong 1939-2020 • "Road Warrior Animal" 1960-2020 • "Zeus" Tiny Lister Jr. 1958-2020 • "Hacksaw" Butch Reed 1954-2021 • "New Jack" Jerome Young 1963-2021 • "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff 1949-2021 • "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton 1958-2021 • Daffney 1975-2021
