considering the masks aren't going to stop anything, the only people who should wear them are the ones in jobs with lots of particles in the air- e.g. construction, janitorial stuffs, and the like.

They're certainly not enough to stop something as small as a virus. Some paper masks, like the ones at hospitals (which means not the ones most foks are buying, I'm sure) might be marginally effective at catching moisture droplets, but then you'd have to change it out immediately.

I love how Mexico revised the number down to 7 deaths, but nobody's noticed. Why think, when they can panic instead?

The WHO has even announced that the masks are useless. My (industrial safety guy) SO says that at best it keeps people from touching their germy hands to their nose and mouth - but it doesn't prevent them from rubbing their eyes so even that is useless.

There are actually 2 reported cases in Denver. One was a baggage handler at DIA and the other was a woman who recently returned home from a Mexican cruise and a brief stay in San Diego. So seems our airport is the hub out here.

I neglected to tell her what my husband (a biochemist who has worked extensively with viruses) told me: that stuff always has ethanol in it, and while it works on bacteria, viruses love ethanol and thrive in it.

hmmm your husband better call this author and let him know his peer-reviewed research is wrong then-especially as it's used as a reference for infection control in hospitals.......

We have I think four confirmed and twenty suspected cases here in southern california. Four schools are closed until May 8th because they each have a (yes one each) suspected or confirmed infected student.

[edit] Yeah, I just read the other posts that confirmed my statement. I don't think that there is anything to freak out about. My brother works @ Dallas-Fort Worth airport and he has to wear the mask...but he works at an airport. Me, I work in a call center and would welcome the flu...this way, maybe some of my coworkers would shut the hell up!

Various strains of the flu always have been and always will be around. Each strain is just as "deadly" as the next, especially to the very young, very old, and those with compromised immune systems. The practice of basic hygiene is the best thing to help slow the spread of virii, and the average person will be over the flu in a few days, anyway.

IMHO what sucks is that everybody is panicking, and people who really do need to see a doctor are not able to get in. The emergency rooms, in particular, are overwhelmed.

Wish me luck in getting an appointment to find out why my back and right hip/leg have suddenly developed excruciating pain! (Hydrocodone 10/325, how I appreciate you!)

Masks....

We've been out of masks since early Monday (before WA had any confirmed cases). People have been running around since then looking for them. No one has them, and I don't care. I wasn't afraid of SARS, West Nile, or avian flu. Swine flu is just the latest stupid.
I mean, regular flu kills thousands of people every year, and I'm sure these same panicky individuals don't bother to get their flu shot, but they think paper will protect them.
Isn't this the same mentality that led to people thinking ducking under a blanket would save them from nuclear fallout?

Seriously, the media loooove to play the panic card. i remember a little thing called West Nile Virus. While this is more serious and easier to catch, it really does not have me too worried. I worry about the kids(mine, my sisters, my coworkers, etc) and my mom(her immune system sucks). then again, I'm not the "OH MY GOD!! FREAK OUT" type.

lol anyone remember SARS? people were afraid of elevator buttons. sadly this nation wide panic attack is causing some racism. My mother teaches a GED class for adults, she also teaches ESL (english as a second language). most of her students are mexican, and she heard them talking about how one of them had gone to a restaurant and as he parked his car, another car quickly backed out from the spot next to him and moved to a different spot farther away. then when he was seated at a table, the waiters couldn't get anyone to accept tables near him. (note, he wasn't coughing or anything)
