If she started talking like that to me, I'd tell her,

"You were constantly watching me first and acting extremely nervous. This is probable cause for shoplifting. Now that you've decided to annoy me with your loud protest and use a race card against me, I'm going to be your special shopping buddy. Let's get the rest of the merchandise you need and get you checked out in an orderly fashion. If you don't like that, return everything you have taken and leave. Your choice."

Not your best moment? i sure think it was. I don't know how that's the ONLY thing you said. I don't know how you kept so cool! I start shaking as soon as someone starts arguing about the return policy. If i felt threatened like that who knows what i'd do! So props.

Anytime someone uses the race card with me, I tell them the truth. I tell them they aren't that special, since I hate everyone equally.

It confuses the person, since they think I will do what ever they want to prove I'm not racist and when that doesn't happen they don't know what to do.

I remember I got a call at work once where someone accused us of being racist because he was banned from our online game for calling someone a honky. Idiot kept going on for five minutes or or more about how we were "racist", that "honky isn't a racist term" and how "apparently you can get banned for being black." Keep in mind, (a)this site was for a children's game (ages 8-13) and (b) how the hell do we know what race you are? We ask for a username and credit card info.

Where I come from cracker and honky are racist terms. I know I got called them a LOT when I lived in a predominantly black neighborhood years ago. Once neighbors got to know me they saw me as a nice person and started standing up for me when others would call me those names.
Lady across the street took such a liking to me she took her shot gun after someone who went by my place when I wasn't home. "She ain't home. You need to leave now." (Bought her a 6pack for that.)

My previous job was for a national telecommunications company. Anyway, when someone wants to connect a phone somewhere, yet the previous people haven't disconnected the phone, the new applicant has to fax through proof of occupancy (lease/contract of sale etc), so the company could legally connect the phone.

Anyway, this SC rings up, and this situation occurs. He then played the 'race card', claiming I was only doing this to him because he was black and how can I sleep at night knowing I'm a racist - considering he didn't even sound black how the heck could I tell he was black

"Yessir, I AM racist... damn humans, why won't you just roll over and die already?"

Somewhat off topic, Mom, Dad, Bro, Bro's boss, and I went out for lunch yesterday, where they had a news program on the TV, talking about Obama's nominant for the Supreme Court, and her comment about latino women versus white men, and the talking head said, "There have been rumblings about reverse racism all over our message boards," or something like that. I went, "Reverse racism? So, you mean, she's being fair to everyone? Racism is RACISM, no matter who it's done to."
                      "I call murder on that!"

It usually takes the wind out of their sales if you very obviously dont' care if they think you are a racist.

Whoever said it was a ploy to get the person to freak out at being called a racist and to back off and apologize was dead on.

It never works on me because I frankly don't care if people think I'm a racist. Especially stupid people. And especially especially stupid racist people.

I think that's *exactly* what they thought would happen. Well, that and the "racist" would end up looking like an idiot. Similar tactics are used by the Klan at their protests. They *want* people to attack them--not only does it "justify" their message, but it occasionally gets new followers into their circle of hatred. Unfortunate, but if you attack them, it only makes them *stronger*

Not my best moment, I admit, but I managed to scare a sufficcient amount of piss out of her to get her to back off.
Not to seem rude or anything, but why do you sound ashamed about standing up for yourself? You didn't do anything wrong by telling her to back off (what do you think you were you supposed to do - let her get in your face and berate you until she got bored and walked away?). You just respectfully asked her to back off, and that's something to be proud of! (especially considering most of us on this board might have not been so nice). There's a difference between being aggressive and being respectfully defensive, and you were definitely respectfully defensive. Don't think of it as your worst moment, but instead hold your head high! You did the right thing.

Rule of thumb: If somebody flips out at you claiming they're not going to steal anything when you offer them assistance, it probably means they were going to steal something.

Which is exactly what happened here.

And I'm with the Kinkoid: Being called a racist only hurts if you allow that to have any meaning on you as a person. And insults hurled by stupid people mean nothing to me.
