  • My Husband was robbed and carjacked at gunpoint

I wasn't sure where to post this so mods feel free to move if necessary. My husband works as a pizza delivery driver. On Wednesday night around 10:30 he was supposed to deliver a couple pizzas to an apartment complex. He got out of the car and as he was walking to the main doors a man was waiting along the side of the building. He held a gun to my husband's head and marched him execution style down some stairs, like he wanted to kill my husband without looking at him.

Apparently he thought better of it, and emptied my husband's pockets while still holding the gun to the back of his head. My husband only had his wallet with his driver's license and social security card $40 and our car keys.

The guy then took off in our '07 Toyota Yaris. My husband used someone's cell phone, called the cops and went to the station to fill out a report, etc... There was one witness to the crime, a deaf woman who was able to give a statement to the police saying she knew the guy who stole our car because he hangs out around there all the time and that she saw him drive off in the car.

I received a call from my husband's boss informing me of the situation. I was stunned and couldn't say much jus paced the house with our son while I waited on him to return. I was so relieved when he got home, the police gave him a ride.

On Thursday about noon we got a call saying our car had been found. The guy took our car and drove it into a park, and crashed it into a bunch of trees. Needless to say our car is totalled, the only part that didn't get damaged is the back. Fortunately we have full coverage insurance which is covering the cost of the car, plus a rental car.

We also had some personal belongings in the car. Our GPS was stolen, it was an older model and not worth much, if anything, our son's stroller was taken it wasn't anything fancy but it was all we had. They did leave the base to his car seat but since it was in an accident it's unusable. My husband also had his 4 Gigabyte flash drive stolen and his CDs were taken. My CDs were left alone, guess the guy didn't like my taste in music. All we were able to recover from the car is my cds, a tire iron a notebook and our license plaes. It was quite the ordeal getting everything of my husband's replaced and getting the rental car, but it all got taken care of. Everything that was stolen we're supposed to get reimbursed for through our insurance, so that is helpfu.

The Police do have a lead on who did his. The very next night two other pizza delivery drivers had the same thing happen at two other stores. Unfortunately their cars have yet to be found. Apparently the robber calls, and places a false order then robs them at gunpoint and steals their car.

So now my husband is looking for a job. Anything really we still have bills to pay and a $1000 deductible on our insurance policy. This really sucks, but we'll be ok, I'm just glad my husband made it home safely. It scared me half to death to get that call from his boss and to know that could've been killed while I was home with our son blissfully unaware of the situation.

I'll update this thread as we know more, but good thoughts, vibes or whatever it is you do are always appreciated. And for anyone doubting the validity of this I can post pictures later, we're still waiting on the Police Reports to be prepared, and I think this might have been on the news but I'm not sure I'll have to do some searching.

I'm glad he's okay. Hope they find that guy. I also hope that everything settles for you guys soon, and that your husband gets a job quickly.

I'm glad your husband is ok and that your insurance has you covered.

Did your husband lose his job because of this? Or did he make the understandable decision that pizza delivery was not for him anymore?

Oh my word. I'm so sorry that you're family has had to endure something like this. I absolutely can understand that it has not been easy. Don't stress the deductible issue. Yes, it has to be paid, but, $1000 and a car is nothing compared to the value of having your loved one still with you. Your husband was very fortunate as you are as well. Sending many good vibes your way. It's rough right now, but it will get better.

Definite suck there, delivered pizza off and on for a long time, and never had that happen. Two suggestions for you from an experienced driver in case he goes back to it, one, never use a new car for the job, the mileage kills the car's value, so you're jus throwing money away. Two, never have a deductible over $500, it doesn't cost much, its easier to pay a $500 deductible, and as much as we'd like to think it'll never happen, accidents do happen.

As to a new job, what about driving a taxi? I've done it, and while its not the safest job, nor is pizza delivery. Out here all it takes to be a taxi driver is a reasonably clean record, be over 23 and have a D (standard passenger car license). Dunno if there's money in it this time of year where you are, out here its the off season which is why i stopped doing it, its hard to make money unless you own your own cab right now (reduces overhead by at least 40%), but its a quick job solution if 24 hour leases are available, since you essentially rent a car 24/7 from them (they take care of everything the car needs), and work when you want to.

What can i say beyond good luck, and its good to hear that he wasn't hurt.

Did your GPS have a home location stored in it? If so you might want to invest in new locks and (if he stole your garage opener) getting the code on your garage door changed (if that is possible, I would think it is.)

It has been common lately for thieves to break into cars when they see a GPS sitting out because the GPS will have a home location and the car will have a garage door opener. I'm not saying any of this to scare you, but just as a heads up that this is becoming fairly common and I know I've seen news stories about it.

That's horrible! I'm glad your husband is okay.

Hopefully the f*ckwad gets caught, and he does some SERIOUS jail time.

Delivering pizza is more dangerous than being a cop. Probably because they go to the exact same places but cops get bullet proof vests, guns, and backup. While Pizza guys just have cash.

:hugs: I'm glad hubby is ok,

It goes without saying the robber is a douchebag, but to crash the car? I can get if he sold it to a chop-shop, (heck, when you get to it, I understanding him robbing for money) but that is just chicken-sh**.

I guess it's good therobber didn't use the car to rob someone else, or run over someone....

If you owed less to your finance company than the car was worth, you should be getting a total loss settlement from your insurance company. My company would cut the check to your bank and the difference to you less your deductible. Your insurance may be different - but you may not actually have to pay it out of pocket.

Good luck, and I hope he recovers from the trauma of it all.

Yes he quit, his boss actually called the next day and asked if he was going to be coming into work. I almost laughed in his face.

Yes the GPS had our home address programmed into it, the garage door opener wasn't in the car, but our house key was on the same ring as the car key. Our landlord was very understanding and changed the locks first thing in the morning.

Glad to hear your husband wasn't hurt! As for the carseat base, I would talk to your car insurance people. Many insurances will replace child/infant carseats when the car is involved in an accident. But you do have to include it on the claim.
