  • How to piss off my manager big time!

Seriously, I swear today will go down in history at my workplace.

OK, so as anyone who works in a supermarket/department store/mix of both knows, high theft items are usually electronics, baby products, razor blades, personal hygiene products, meat, DVDs etc.

In the case of my store (supermarket), when we get items that we sell that people claim to have bought from another store, we ask for receipts. No receipt, it depends on the product. If it's something like orange juice, we can usually give them the benefit of the doubt. If it's high theft, then we do generally get suspicious.

Today, a lady rocked up to my coworker's register with groceries, but she also had some nappies in her trolley. Coworker asks for receipt, lady cannot produce one. as my coworker attempts to get a manager, the lady starts dropping several f-bombs on my coworker, which causes the other customers in line to start bitching at the lady for swearing in front of their kids!

And it all goes downhill from there....

My awesome manager (AM) comes down at that point and begins to neutralise the situation. by this point, me, two other coworkers, ALL the customers from my register, my coworkers registers and those who were getting ready to leave were watching this lady. She continues to drop f-bombs at my manager, who got really pissed and started asking her to leave. She refused to, and then....

Sucky Lady: Give me back my money!
    All of us:
Sucky lady: That girl ripped me off $50! (points at my coworker)

I honestly don't know if the lady was $50 short or not, but by that point, my manager wanted her to leave. She still refused to leave, so AM calls down the nightfill manager and the two of them escort her out. She has since been banned although of course...she threatened never to shop here again!

Oh and my coworkers register was $9.00 over.

And my manager.... I have never seen him THAT pissed off EVER.

She made the 'I'll never shop here again' remark before my manager banned her.

and my coworker was fine afterwards. Me and another coworker nearby were shaking though. We kept an eye on her though just in case. My customers all agreed that she did the right thing.

Corrected for your benefit. BTW, awesome manger.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

            Yes, you can clone him

With the whole bag-free ban, a lot of people just put their groceries into their trolley and pack it themselves in the car because they forget their bags and don't want to buy any more...of course, that heightens suspicions when we ask for receipts and they can't produce them.

Probably one of the more gutsier shoplifters I've seen was a woman who had a false bottom of sorts in her bag....it was a black garbage bag FILLED with meat and perishable products. she was forced to pay for said products (bar a couple of meat ones) and left with a lifelong ban. I swear one of these days I'm heading over to our competition and going to see if the customers kick up a storm there

This one surprised me. How expensive could razor blades be? I've used electrics all my life so I've never bought them, but I've seen bags of whole razors for a few bucks. Blades only should be less.

Have you heard of the "razor and blades" business model? For non-disposable razors, blades are VERY expensive, especially for higher-end razors like the Gilette Mach 3/5 family of razors. It's the same concept that applies to ink and toner cartridges.

                  Well that explains printer ink.

I don't know if batteries are a high theft item, but I did see an 8-pack of AA batteries, with 2 missing, stuffed behind some cookies at the local supermarket. Geeze, those things are cheap.

She was originally purchasing the items, but because she had no receipt for the nappies and refused to produce one, she wanted a refund.

In regards to the questions about high-theft items, I can answer a few of them. Most of these are more from observation, IANAL.

Batteries: cost a bit more in Australia, from around $5 for a four-pack, through to about $20 for an 8 pack. It's more for bigger batteries.

Baby products: The main ones are formula, nappies, clothing and the like. Baby food is surprisingly rarely stolen. (it's like about $1.50 for a tin of baby food) In this case, from what I've seen, it's mothers who can't deal with the cost of raising a newborn.

Razor blades: The printer and ink line I think safely sums that up. Also popular on the black market.

But for something as easily knock-off-able as razor blades I don't see how that could work.

Sure, they can knock off the blades, but not the system used to attach the blades to the razor, which changes from brand to brand, and sometimes even from model to model within a brand. Gillette blades aren't compatible with Wilkinson razors and vice versa. I'm not sure whether Wilkinson Quattro blades can be mounted on other Wilkinson razors.

on any given day I can walk down my many departments and find one to five empty knife and razor packs. mostly opened for the sole purpose of cutting open dvd or c.d. packages
