I have a service dog (SD), and because I choose not to put an orange vest on her I am constantly stopped by workers who want to let me know that pets aren't allowed. I am happy to politely let them know she's a working dog, not a pet, and is legally permitted to go where ever I can go, even into restaurants. While I have been shuffled off to a far corner of the dining room to avoid disturbing other guests, I have yet to encounter rudeness once people realize she's a service animal.

But I can't stand people who bring unsocialized animals out in public. That dog growled at you: if you didn't do anything to provoke the dog then right then and there animal control should have been called for a vicious dog report. If nothing else, it would provide documentation to cover your business if the guy came back. I know that if my dog ever were to react in an aggressive way while we're out together it is my responsibility to get her out of that situation immediately! A dog baring its teeth and growling isn't cute, it isn't funny, and it should never be tolerated. It's the canine equivalent of brandishing a gun and should always be taken as the deadly serious threat that it is.

Also, I do NOT recommend trying to take the drinks from the hands of dog-owners. That is likely to result in another bite when "precious snookums" thinks you're attacking its master/mommy/daddy/whatever. When that happens, you won't have a leg to stand on (pardon the pun) when the SC's lawyer points out that the dog wouldn't have attacked if you hadn't made an aggressive move towards the SC. The best thing you can do is make certain the staff doesn't serve anyone with an animal unless they first ask if it's a service animal. No service, no drink to take away later.

If that fails, get a picture of the SC and the dog on someone's cellphone, ask any customers sitting nearby to move away (so you don't have *another* lawsuit to contend with) and refuse further service to the SC with the mutt. Shunning is still an effective psychological weapon, and if the SC gets belligerent and starts making a scene, you have another reason to call the cops.
Sorry, my cow died so I don't need your bull

it just seems like too many people think it's "cool" to have a mean, badass gangsta dog
My mean, badass gangsta dog is gonna be a huge Rottweiler with all the aggression of a cut daisy.

HFP, I had a great Dane once. Damn thing was about Four feet at the shoulder, had a bark that could rattle the house, and was such a complete marshmallow that, when I was a wee podling of four or so years, She'd lie down on her side and curl up around me to protect me when I was having a nap.

Wonderful, lovable dog, with a temperament that said 'I'm caring, but protective'. We eventually gave her to a family friend of advanced years, and both died within weeks of one another, because they bonded so tightly. (The dog was nearly 15, which is practically ancient for the large breeds, and her owner was in her mid 90's.)

As for Pesty McJerkass in the OP, Might i suggest animal control be called upon the human instead of the (sadly, de-socialized, and possibly borderline feral) canine?

I know we're pretty sue-happy over here in the states, but I really think this jerk should be tracked down and sued within an inch of poverty. And frankly, I think the pub should also sue, if they find the guy. I'm sure the pub's insurance costs will be going up after this one.

If I remember the law over here (Dangerous Dogs act from yesteryear), any dog attacking a human is liable to be put down. If my memory is correct, he's sentenced his dog to death.

I'm also glad the gardener is okay. That SC is really a jerk!!! Leave your pet at home unless you're going to petsmart, a park or something that is actually for pets! I hope if he ever dares to come back that he gets into a lotta trouble with the cops. There was no excuse for that.

I think the owner needs to be found ASAP to ensure the dog has had its shots; for the Gardener's safety. It's sad when a dog has to be put down because the owners never took care of it properly.

Mall I used to work had a lot of service dogs it seemed. But someone was ALWAYS complaining 'there's a dog in the mall!' And I explained it was a seeing eye dog/etc. And they'd say 'It can't be! Only german shepherds/yellow labs/golden retrievers can be seeing eye dogs!' Sigh. I saw service standard poodles, boxers and mixes.

Pretty much the same thing in my state (on the other side of the pond). I don't like to see dogs put down but the health and safety of humans comes first (Wow. Did I actually say that??? Screw it. Shoot the owner.)

I love those morons. The ignorant ones who seem to think that only seeing eye dogs in harness count as service dogs really annoy me. People better get used to seeing service dogs with people who have no obvious disability: the number of service members coming back from the wars with PTSD is on the rise, and service dogs really help these people get back into living normal lives again.

Even worse than the kvetchers, though, are the people who see a dog decked out in the orange vest with patches on it clearly saying "Service Dog, Do Not Touch/Pet/Disturb" but who still walk up cooing and wanting to pet the puppy. I think these are the same idiots who can't read safety and sale signs or find expiration dates on coupons!

It is one of my biggest pet peeves when people bring their pets EVERYWHERE with them (excluding service dogs of course). You get excuses like "well I just cant leave them at home". Im sorry, I doubt your dog really enjoys being stuck in the car while you shop, eat, and such. And I don't think that just because a dog is smaller, it has more right to be in a mall or restaurant than a large dog. Sorry still a dog.

On top of the health code reasons as to why a dog cannot be at yoru restaurant, your SC jeopordized the safety of everyone on that patio and he knew it. You arn't oblivious to the fact you have a violent/aggressive dog, and he willingly brought it in public. He should be sued/fined whatever and unfortunately, his poor dog will probably be put down due to his idiocy. People like this should be banned from owning cats, dogs and large animals as its already been proven that they cannot train and socialize properly, and have no regard for other peoples health and safety.

Lol, kind of gets my blood boiling...
Sorry, my love cannot be bought. And if it could, you obviously don't have enough in your account to do so.

Sadly, if the owner/dog is found, the dog will be put down if it has no records. And I'm guessing the dog has no records if he's owned by an irresponsible person like that. Even if the dog is up to date on shots, it probably will be put down. Especially if it really is a pit bull. Pit bulls aren't supposed to be aggressive towards humans AT ALL, and in making his dog like that he's fucked it dog up, sadly I love (real) pit bulls, but if one attacks a human it's unstable, and should be put down.

Customersruinmylife, I really hope they find him and I really hope your gardener is okay and the dog didn't have anything. Was it a real pit pull/stafford or one of those 70+ monstrosities people call pit bulls?

He says he's sorry for what another pit bull did. (And he's sad someone thinks him ugly )

I'm sure if you find the guy, his response will be along the lines of 'the gardener provoked the dog', 'he was just protecting me', 'he shouldn't have been working in the garden with customers around anyway.' I interned with our local animal control office for 3 1/2 years in college, heard every excuse. People are ungracious, irresponsible jerks, especially where their children or pets are involved.

As an aside, you're in the UK, correct? I thought the Dangerous Dog Act banned the ownership of pitbulls.
