Our lunches were only 20 minutes so not really the time to leave the school. However, for Senior year the top 10% of the class (it may have been 2nd half of the year only, I don't remember) could leave during any study hall. I had second period study hall, so went out for breakfast once a week or so.

I went to the Mercersburg Academy for a year of post-graduate study after I graduated high school. Now, during the week, it was closed campus. You could only go off-campus on weekends, which many seniors (and post-grads) would take advantage of by going to some ice cream place in town (the name of which escapes me at present), where some of them would try to sneak in a cigarette. (Mercersburg had a pretty strict no-drugs, no-cigarettes, no-alcohol policy, and IIRC, it was instant expulsion if you were busted.)

The year I was there, something like eight to ten students were busted, one of them a junior, the rest seniors/post-grads. And several of them were class officers. One of them was even the son of the school chaplain. (This meant he lived in town, which had to be doubly embarrassing.)
