I found out in my most recent training that there are a handful of states where it's illegal to require an ID for a credit card purchase--including mine. No wonder I feel so weird when I go visit my parents and EVERY STORE requires ID (I have it, of course!), and my parents were very uncomfortable when they came to visit and not a single cashier even glanced at the card when it was swiped.

We're trying to protect people and there has been so much identity theft, I thought people would like to be protected...
They could always sign up for LifeLock or something like that...I think one of those places had its founder show his SSN publically as a sort of "come and get me" to would-be thieves. It's my understanding that there were upwards of a dozen fraudulent accounts opened in his name ...successfully...within a day. So much for prevention...

There was a commercial, one of those public service things, might have been our state only (and not even sure what state I was living in) that I loved. Showed a woman (jeans, jeans jacket, blonde hair down so you couldn't see her face) pick up a six pack then the clerk asks for her ID. As she hands it over, she pulls her hair back so you can see her better, and she's smiling - the tag line was "Always ask for ID - make some forty-something's day".
I saw a billboard that had a little old white-haired lady, with the caption, "Don't feel bad! They asked me for my ID too!"

I noticed that my state is HUGE on checking ID's. Especially at the casinos but I took a trip to CA to go to Knotts and not once did I have to ever show my ID for anything! It was weird. I guess I didn't realize how important ID is out here.

I get several complaints about how they have to show ID for everything and should just wear it around their necks. I like the fact that we are so ID orientated. We're trying to protect people and there has been so much identity theft, I thought people would like to be protected... But to them its just a hassle.

I had a guy come in not long ago with several random holes punched in his license. He looked quite embarrassed as he told me that his young child had gotten ahold of it with a hole punch. None of the holes were in a particularly bad spot - I could see the photo and date - so I accepted it, but told him that he needed to get a new one before presenting it to us again.

My cards are signed and also say "CID." Out of the few places here that aren't self-swipe, only one employee at one gas station ever asks to see my ID. It's become a joke between us. After several days in a row, I jokingly told her she could ask for it again the next week, so now she'll say, "Is it time for me to check your ID again yet?"

You know the ones who scream the loudest about you checing their ID would also scream the loudest if someone else got their CC and used it
    Preaching to the choir ^_^

Personally, I like it, I hate knowing that anyone can use my card no questions asked.[
I like it when I get carded, myself. I WANT them to check the ID's. It would, at least in theory, cut way back on CC fraud if everybody did it consistently.
I assume you have permission from anyone who's card you use, but if you can use it everywhere, so could anyone else - rather scary, in my book.
Well...that's part of why I believe in checking ID's (on both side of the register). Unless I'm mistaken, using somebody else's card -- even with their explicit verbal permission -- is considered fraud.

Well, when the credit card says "See ID," this is required in places that self-swipe is not an option. Such as restaurants, bars, and hotels, among others.
I had one of these the other day at work. Woman tells me to fill her car up and I asked how she was paying. She hands me her card and in black marker on the front and back is "SEE ID". So I ask her for her ID and she flips out because she had to reopen her purse and pocket book.

I just told her that SHE was the one that put "SEE ID" on the card and not me. If it wasn't on there then I would have just swiped the card and started the pump.

I was told when I first got hired that we are to "just run the card" and have them sign the slip. As far as I know it only came back to bite the owner a few times. One guy tried to dispute 5 years of charges. And a few people had reported their cards stolen.

Back then we had a little box we swiped the card, told it the amount and it prited the slip. Now each pump has a card reader.

The old one use to cause lots of problems, like they would get $50 in gas and when we ran the card it would be declined. The new way rocks, we run the card first and it will not allow us to pump gas until the card is approved. No more arguments on how they are going to pay us. Card denied = sorry got another card or cash? No? No gas for you!

Where is this even required anymore? Self-swipe has made this procedure ridiculously obsolute. I've used my grandmas card, multiple boyfriends cards, other peoples EBT cards. I've never been carded on a CC unless it was a place where the cashier swiped it and even then it was a 80/20 swing if they'd ask for ID. I also never signed the back of my card (which i realized was stupid and started signing them) and my signature amounts to A~~~~ or when I know theyre supposed to check "This is not my card"

    Never had a problem.
I shop at lots of small indivualy owned shops, tons of them don't have the latest equipment, and still check ID's. And yes, there are even some large stores that check. Personally, I like it, I hate knowing that anyone can use my card no questions asked. I assume you have permission from anyone who's card you use, but if you can use it everywhere, so could anyone else - rather scary, in my book.

The type of transaction causes the person to have to go to the cage to retrieve their money. Had they done a normal debit card transaction the money would've come out of the machine. But she had a credit card and didn't use a pin and got stuck coming up to the cage.

    casino

Proper ID makes sense then! I've only been to a casino a handful of times and only got carded walking in. This was in missouri where your casino had to be in a boat

For that matter, the casinos around these parts require proper ID before you can even step foot onto the floor. That means no kids or anyone under 21. I would think the potential for fraud is extremely high in casinos, which is why so many rules are in place.
Heh, the one time I went to gamble in Atlantic City (because I could...! because I had just turned 21. Actually my friend's mom and stepdad had said they'd take her when she turned 21 and she waited 6 months so I could go with them) my friend and I got carded 5 times just walking around the floor (and once at the cashier getting change)...twice by the same guy! Funny part was, our IDs were pretty much interchangeable because we look a lot alike.

It's true that many stores have streamlined the checkout process, but I believe the OP works in a casino and is therefore in a completely different environment. If you want cash straight from the casino, you need to have proper ID. For that matter, the casinos around these parts require proper ID before you can even step foot onto the floor. That means no kids or anyone under 21. I would think the potential for fraud is extremely high in casinos, which is why so many rules are in place.

Now her mastercard also looked odd because the back was printed upside down. Normally credit cards aren't (the ones I've seen anyway) upside down on the back.
Normally they aren't, no. That is not to say that it never happens. I have seen it enough times to tell you it is not that uncommon. It is a printing error on the part of the credit card manufacturer, and just like any other product, errors do happen. Hell, I once bought a blue-backed deck of playing cards only to open the blue box and discover red-backed cards inside. I have only seen that once. I once bought a record that was printed with one label but had an entire different band's recording on it. I saw that one once. I have seen countless examples of credit cards with the backsides reversed from the font side. Not that uncommon, honestly.
