I...um. Hm. I think this is getting way off topic and possibly into fratching territory...lemme just start a thread over there and stop derailing this one. (It's in the politics section, just waiting for approval since I hadn't registered for Fratching yet.)
I was feeling more tongue in cheek when asking

I have been to Wendover. This summer in fact, and the above still doesn't make me want to ever go back.

There's four casinos in that town. Three of them are basically one and the same. If you're not into gambling--and I'm not--you'll be bored very quickly.
actually, there is five... the Nugget (where I go to), the Red Garter (which is absolute crap), and then the big three, the Peppermill (which is way too dark and smokey), the Rainbow (which hasn't had good table games when I've been there) and the Montego Bay (which is out of my price range).
You're right though, there is absolutely nothing out there to do but gamble.

Well, I do live in the most corrupt state in the country...
Hey now -- MY state is supposed to hold that dubious distinction ^_^
I can see 2 possibilities for why New Jersey is listed as the most corrupt state even though some Louisiana residents feel their state deserves the title:
    1. Certain officials from LA didn't want their state tagged with that distinction, so they bribed whoever was making the evaluation to move them down the list.
    2. Certain officials from NJ wanted the distinction, so they bribed whoever was making the evaluation to put them at the top of the list.

you're in Nevada right... you've clearly never been to Wendover
seriously, I got carded once and that was to sign up for my players card... ever since then my players card is practically as good as ID, just throw it down on the table with my money and they don't check to make sure that I'm even the proper card holder, that I'm 21, hell, they'll bring out hard drinks if your sitting at the table... you don't even have to be playing... it's kind of scary actually.

Where is this even required anymore? Self-swipe has made this procedure ridiculously obsolete.
that actually depends... whenever I go to BestBuy or anywhere on campus I still get carded even when using the self swipe machines...

I don't understand why it would be illegal to require an ID for a credit card? I mean, it's nominally for the customer's protection. Unless of course, our governments are so corrupt that they are in bed with the scammers and swindlers (besides themselves of course).

Edit: But honestly, I don't know. It just popped up in the training that if you were in certain states, including mine, to disregard the part of the training involving IDs and credit cards because of state laws. (Store policy is to ask for credit card and ID together.) I only ask for ID when looking up store cards or if the register actually prompts for one.

Am I the only one that would be thrilled with people asking for my ID with CC's and such? It ensures my shit doesn't become someone else's, and in general makes me feel a bit more secure.
I don't have any problem with anyone asking me for my ID, and I don't understand why so many people do. Gee, it's just so much work and effort to carry around and produce a little 3ΒΌ" x 2", 0.1 oz plastic card. Gosh, all that extra weight must be such a drag to carry around!

Sarcasm aside, I always wonder about those who kick up a fuss over being asked for ID. It makes me wonder what they're hiding.

I found out in my most recent training that there are a handful of states where it's illegal to require an ID for a credit card purchase--including mine. No wonder I feel so weird when I go visit my parents and EVERY STORE requires ID (I have it, of course!), and my parents were very uncomfortable when they came to visit and not a single cashier even glanced at the card when it was swiped.

AGREED! I don't even start returns without an ID--our software prompts for the type, number, issuing agency, and expiration date. We place signs all over to the effect that "No files or checks will be given out without an ID." and still at least once a week we get one who either "forgot" and/or asks us to make an exception. Hell, my ID has to be logged and I work there.

I think one of those places had its founder show his SSN publically as a sort of "come and get me" to would-be thieves. It's my understanding that there were upwards of a dozen fraudulent accounts opened in his name ...successfully...within a day.
    From wikipedia:

A class action lawsuit alleges that as of 2008, there are at least 25 people using Todd Davis' social security number and that the advertising claims are misleading. The Company has responded demonstrating that the 25 alleged identity thieves are public records of failed attempts to use Todd Davis' identity.
Amusingly, while researching the above, I found out that LifeLock is, apparently, based in my home town.

Visa/Mastercard regulations state that as long as the card is signed, they cannot request an ID as long as the signatures match.

That said, I don't normally ask for ID unless I have to manually punch the card into the register (defective magnetic strip or the card reader is acting weird) AND it says "See ID" or isn't signed. The one time I've asked for ID outside of that is when the register popped up "!!! STOLEN CARD !!!" a few days ago.. their ID matched the card, I told them they needed to see what was on my screen and showed them. Turns out fraud protection had kicked in, my mom's CC has done the exact same thing before when someone got ahold of the numbers in the past.

With that out of the way, a lot of places still require ID with a CC... most notably my favorite head/smoke shop.
