  • Postal Strike Strikes

Those of you in the UK will be well aware of this, but for everyone else, the British postal service is on strike. There are already millions of items of post stacked up in warehouses all over the country, including, it seems, several of my credit card statements and a rather nice sweater I ordered two weeks ago. Bad times.

Anyway, apparently this is all MY fault.

BB: Your friendly neighbourhood publishing editor BookBint
SC: Arsey author who needs a good kicking

    *telephone rings*

    BB: Hello, HistoryPublishingHouse, BookBint speaking.
SC: This is Arsey Author. I sent my signed contract to you FIVE days ago and you haven't returned a copy to me!!!
BB: Ah, hello Arsey. I'm afraid we haven't yet received your contract. I guess it must be the postal strike. Once we get it we'll return it to you by the courier service we're using at the moment until the post is up and running again.

One would assume that would be that. Oooooooh no.

SC: But I sent it FIVE days ago!
BB: Well there have been local strikes on around our area even before the national one, so it's probably sitting in a warehouse somewhere. If you want I'll courier you another copy and you can courier it back?
SC: That's not good enough! I sent it FIVE days ago!

This went on for ages. How he had sent it FIVE days ago. Yes, I get it. But it's not MY fault the posties have downed tools, why the frick are you shouting at me? On and bloody on.

Well if you KNEW it was all your fault, why weren't you more accommodating?

By the way, what does "downed tools" mean - is that just another way of saying "On strike"?

Yup. a reference to people literally putting the tools of their trade down on their workbench and walking out. It's a bit more of a metaphor now though.
Local weekly strikes for the last month or two here. good time to be in the courier business.

This is probably the most anyone will ever talk about his book anyway.

            This site is so useful.

We ocaisionally buy from and sell to the UK, so it's good to know things are a bit dodgey right now.

Sucks to have to live with that, however. I feel for you. Not so much your author, however.

I agree, I would have probably never known about the strike otherwise. Interesting stuff! (<-- doesn't read the news )

Postal Strikes are a utter pain, My internet and phone bill has yet to arrive.

Right, so when these postal workers do get a raise ro whatever, I wonder if they'll contribute to buisnesses and individuals who have lost money because of it.

I don't have a credit card no intention of getting one either. I handle my money best by paying in solid cash. That way then I can't get into debt as it's impossible to spend more than i have.

pretty smart. i don't think i could ever get rid of my debit card tho...i've had my wallet stolen one too many times. so easy to call up my bank and cancel the card. if my cash gets stolen...i'm s.o.l.

I pay all of my bills online. With my debit card. The money comes straight from my bank and goes straight to theirs. I could also have my bank mail checks on my behalf, too, and that costs nearly nothing, as well.

You know you owe money. Not getting a paper bill about what you owe when you obviously have internet access is no excuse.

I don't even look at my bills except when the total doesn't match, and then I check the details. Otherwise, I just pay everything every month based on what bills get paid every month. It's not like it's a mystery what those are.

Just a note, but you're completely hamstringing yourself.

Nekojin used to think the same exact thing. And now he can't get a credit card at all unless he's willing to pay some outrageous annual fee for the privilege.

It's much, much smarter to get a card at your earliest convenience and learn how to not spend beyond your means and build a credit rating than to just not have a credit card at all.

Hell, my credit rating is about 725, and I can't get jack squat for a revolving credit account for the same reason. And I've had a credit card. But the lack of data points on my credit report means they won't trust me. Don't get caught in that same stupid trap.

Thing is. the postal workers get paid an awful lot compared to a lot of pwople for what is basically manual labour. I've studied my bum off for 3 years and my husband ( a postie) gets paid more than me. He isnt striking though. I have noticed people blaming stuff on the post when they blatantly didnt send it though. that is sucky

I am waiting on a game I bought on ebay which is somewhere in the postal system.

I do do all my banking by direct debit and online, so delayed statements won't bother me.

yeah my boy and i would be screwed if it weren't for online payments. whenever he goes off for training or gets deployed, all the bills he takes care of get pulled right out of his bank. it's super handy
