  • Good Friday, Bad ID

Trading Standards came up with the policy of "Think 25", not me. I am getting rather sick of people bitching at me cuz of it. -.-

Anyway, yesterday my collegue Anthony and I were doing the late shift. It was a manic panic til about five pm, then it slacked off cuz most customers were under the impression that Good Friday meant shorter hours. If only. This customer came in about two hours later and asked for cigarettes; she looked under eighteen, so I IDed her and she didn't have any ID. She is not the SC; however, her boyf who she either sent in or who came in of his own accord, is definitely the SC.

He came in to buy cigarettes. Cuz we'd refused his girlf, we were on the spot in case he asked for the same ones. He didn't, so we couldn't be sure if he was buying them for her. However, he looked under twenty five, so Anthony IDed him; he didn't have ID. This is where the SCness starts. -.- Swearwords replaced with censored signs.

SC: What the f? Why the f are you asking me for ID? I'm fing twenty three and I've got three kids!
Anthony: I'm sorry but it's store policy.
SC: I haven't got my driving licience on me, you f prick.
Anthony: Then I guess you should have remembered to take it with you. I'm not serving you.
SC: You fing c! I come in here all the fing time; she remembers me! *he points at me, I look up*
    Me: Sorry, but I don't.
Anthony: I'm not going to serve you. If you don't leave, I'm calling security.
SC: F you. I'm going to beat your fing arse.
Anthony: Just leave. If you don't, I'm calling security.
    SC: F you. *leaves*

Yeah, we are really going to change our minds now that you've sworn at us and threatened us.

Wow people need to grow up. It isn't our responsibility to prove a customer's age. It's their responsibility to show proper ID. If they don't have it, it's on them. Somehow that never seems to prevent the ranting though.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

Congratulations, your genes found a compatible host/hosts. But if you're driving around without your license on you, you definitely aren't old enough or responsible enough to buy controlled products.

One of my foster sisters had 2 kids by the time she was 17. Even so, she *definitely* wasn't mature or responsible, and still too young to buy cigs/booze.

You do not need to have your licence on you when driving in britain which is where I think OP is from, but that is still no excuse for the rant.

"That's all well and good, sir, but the LAW requires that anyone who looks under 25 and attempts to buy cigarettes MUST provide proper identification. Since you cannot produce proper identification, by LAW we CANNOT sell you cigarettes. Since we are NOT willing to break the LAW, we WILL NOT sell you cigarettes. If you have a problem with the LAW, I suggest you take it up with the people who make the laws, but your business here is DONE. Good day, sir!"

Since when did being a parent count as valid ID? I need to stay up to date with the changes in law.

Wow, if that second place was here, TABC would be all over them for closing them down/taking away their license.

                  Why?

It is the server's decision to card or not card. If they don't card, and the person in question is of legal age, while they may have made a poor decision, they have not violated any laws.

If, however, the server did ask for ID, and the person did not have it with them, and the server still served them, THEN they would be in violation. But not carding someone is only a violation when the person in question is not of valid drinking age.

Weird, I know, but that's the way it works.

B/C without legal ID, you're not allowed to serve alcohol according to TABC. My brother isn't allowed to work a certain venue in TX anymore because he served someone who showed a Mexican ID. Only state/federal ID's are valid identification here.

Ed: The person he served was 18-20, so not even drinking age.

Especially since there are people in their teens with kids. XD

I'm thinking that the girlf is the victim here, seeing as she has to put up with the SC all the time. O.o

                        Not entirely true.

Regarding the server not carding the poster and serving them:

"Texas state law does not require that a person over 21 provide any identification to purchase alcohol in Texas." (Source: TABC's website.)

                        Regarding accepting foreign ID's:

"There is nothing in the law that declares specific forms of ID as “valid” for an alcohol purchase." (Source: TABC's website.)

"A store, bar or restaurant might or might not sell alcohol to a person with an expired driver's license, a foreign passport or other ID. What's acceptable in any establishment is a matter of that establishment's private business policies." (Source: TABC's website.)

Anyone in any job who has to ID people has my sympathy regarding the fit throwers and people who start dropping more F bombs than rappers.

It's such a simple thing, but it leads to so much childish behavior that it leads one to wonder how that person even made it to 18/21 without their Cruisers and their binkie and blankee.

I was called every name in the book, threatened in almost every way, and given every excuse in the book to NOT have ID when I had to card people for smokes and alcohol. It was one of the most stressfull parts of my job working at a gas station.

Oh, and the preface threats were even better. "You BETTER NOT card me, I come in here every day!" or "You CAN'T card me, I come here all the time!"

Or the fast ones...hmmm, park your car right in front of the store, no ID no sale, so magically 10 seconds later, the passenger/driver comes in wanting the same cigarettes or beer....yeah, I may be a natural blonde, but I'm not that dumb.

Wow, I could almost swear that an ex-coworker had moved to the other side of the world, found a boyfriend similar to one she had hear, and decided to repeat the same performance they gave my boyfriend at his service station. That sounds exactly how his encounter happened...

If I know the person is over 18 because they actually look more like 24 or 25, I simply say that "It's not because I think you are under 18, it's because you look under 25 They tend to take it a lot better. Hey, it's what the sign says in front of the scratchie counter.

Though I don't ever say it this bluntly to the person, the fact is, when it comes to a choice of pissing off an individual or running afoul of the legal system, I am going to piss off that person every single time. Sorry, I don't care who you are or what you say, pissing you off is not going to ever put me in the position of being referred to as "The Defendant."

And that's the way, uh huh, uh huh, I like it, uh huh, huh....
