Hee, my old movie theater coworker showed me a trick. As people were leaving the lobby he'd just randomly call out "lglvbhwer4834953skdk!!" and wave to the closest person. They'd look-up, smile and say "Yeah, you too!" or "It is nice out!" or "Thank you!" So it was all in the body language and the sound he was making; they had no clue what he said, but had automatically responded. Go figure!

When people ask me how I am, I usually say "just peachy." They laugh. Apparently it sounds like I'm being sarcastic (who, me?)

Yes yes, omg yes! This is one of my biggest pet peeves at work.

          Me: Hi, how's it going?
          SC: Paper/plastic.

It annoys me to no end!

          DS Andy Wainwright: Farmers.

          DS Andy Cartwright: Farmers’ mums.

When you consider that half the cashiers in the retail industry don't ask "How are you?", are you really surprised that some customers dont care you've asked?

For me, i always say "Not bad thank you." Which is kind halfway. I don't want to start a conversation but i don't want to sound rude either.

on the flip side, i always ask "How are you today?" at work and almost never get a response that matches the question

I've been getting this one a lot more recently:
              J: "How are you today?"
              SC: "Thanks!"
              J:
In this singular case, it's quite possible they said another short word, before the "thanks" such as fine, or well, or the like, but in a much quieter tone, so you didn't catch it.

The rest are just too self-absorbed to even notice the words being said to them.
