Pay at the pump is fine if you don't mind the $75 - $150 hold. (amount is dependent on the gas station/convenience store - the $150 is very rare).

Edit: and most of those places don't bother to release the hold when they put thru the actual charge, so that amount sits there tied up 8-12 business days until it falls off naturally.

I go to Arco, which is debit only, and I have yet to actually see a hold, though it's likely there.

And the time it spends on your system is as much a function of your bank as it is of them. Especially since everybody but hotels pretty much flushes all holds at the end of every day.
