  • Meanwhile at the anime convention (second day)

So, I forgot I'd been posting my adventures at the anime convention (had memory jogged when flipping through some of the pictures I took), so I figured I'd post some of the stories I got the second day.

Not much really happened, save for these few stories.

    It'll never die!!!

Now, I thought the Twilight craze was dying down. I see more cosplayers portraying vampires that are making fun of twilight (best would be a tie between the Edward Cullen wearing an anti-twilight pin and the vampire carrying around a sparkly vampire head made out of paper mache on a stick) than I do anyone who is endorsing the craze. However, I guess there was still one person out there, and they decided they would go to an anime convention to get their Twilight fix.

    Let this sink in..

I'm dressed as Yomiko Readman (look her up, she's awesome) but I'm a brunette with long really curly hair that I had to alter a tad to look nice. Now, I'm a bit plumper than your average girl, and I look nothing like Kirsten Stewart. I find this an important detail.

    The cast-
    RM-
    TG-Twilight girl

TG- (ambles up and she's not really setting off any sirens. She's dressed normal (not in cosplay but not really wearing anything twilight) and she doesn't really say hi to me or anything before she starts thumbing through the binder with my artwork. I try to engage her in conversation, she doesn't respond, I figure she'll either find something she wants or she'll go away. She stops about midway through and points at the picture in front of her) Is this Alice?

RM-(looks at the picture confused because I took out a few of the Alice inspired prints I did the previous year since they did not sell as well) No that (character) from (series).

TG-Oh, never heard of it. (looks through again, and every so often she pauses on a character and asks me about them. I figured out she was asking about Twilight characters around the time she asked me about if one character was Bella)

RM-Sorry, I don't have any Twilight prints. I can do a commission for you if you like.

TG-(looks at me, then cocks her head, and now I'm wierded out) But, you're dressed as Bella. You HAVE to have Twilight. Where are they?

RM- I'm not dressed as Bella. I'm dressed as Yomiko Readman from Read or Die.

TG- No, you're dressed as Bella. Listen I just want some Twilight art and everyone here sucks and no one has any. You're Bella, you should have some.

RM-I'm not Bella, I'm *rinse, wash, repeat*

*So save you some insanity, this goes on for awhile. Eventually, I convinced her I was not Bella and she wandered off muttering how I sucked. Later I saw the vampire with the paper mache head and gave him her description since I thought she'd "appreciate" the cosplay. *

    Details, Details, Details

Sadly, I feel this must be repeated. When I do a commission, I need details. I need to know what character you want, how you want them posed, if you want another character there, what you want them wearing. If you want to leave the decisions up to me, I have no problem, but I must ask that YOU KNOW WHAT SERIES YOUR CHARACTER COMES FROM!! Someone actually came up asking for, and I quote, "That guy from that one thing."

RM-That guy from that one thing?

SC-Yeah, and he has that hair.

    RM-

SC- And he can do the...stuff

    RM-

    SC-And he's got the girlfrend.

RM-Okay. What thing is the guy from?

SC- You know, the one thing!

    RM: What one thing?

SC: The thing with the stuff!

    RM-

I never figured out who this "One guy from this one thing with the stuff who has the hair and the girlfriend who could do the stuff" was. He wandered off because he was going to get me a picture of the guy and he never came back which kind of sucks cause he piqued my curiosity. I guess it's cool the con ended with a bit of a mystery.

    Morals

This happened after I hit up the dealers hall for a bit and bought some swag. One thing I pick up at every convention I go to is yaoi (essentially stories featuring men in more adult situations). Technically I've been a fan since I was 14, but I really began buying them up the second I was legal. That being said, I'm 22, and I hate when people try to preach to me about my morals.

To the "nice" little old lady who briefly saw the cover of my book (I seriously think she may have had x-ray vision because they gave it to me in a black, opaque bag but it wasn't that bad. No manbits were showing but it left very little to the imagination and you could tell the two characters on the front were male and probably doing more than sharing a passionate hug), I don't care if you don't agree with homosexuality. I don't care if you believe the "fags" are going to hell for being pedophiiles, spreading AIDS, etc. While I'm interested in the fact that out of an entire convention that is probably filled with girls and boys who probably hit up the yaoi or hentai stands in the dealers room you picked me out to rant to, I still don't care.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn so SHUT UP!!

I lost her in the con and never saw her again.

And that was the second day. Third and final day is on the way.

      Rena, you have my sympathies.

Re: Twilight Girl - Just because someone is dressed up as a given character doesn't mean they have to have art from that show/whatever in their binder. Period. Even if you did correctly identify the cosplay, which you didn't. Take the offer of a commission or drop the subject. And no, just because something is "super popular" and "everyone does it" doesn't mean it's in my binder.

Re: Commission Guy - I haven't had that one yet, but I have had the people who just expected me to know how to draw Popular Character from Popular Show when I have absolutely nothing from that show at my table. They were quite put out when I asked for reference. Just because something is popular doesn't mean I've seen it, and even if I have, I can't draw everyone from a given show without reference. Heck, even with my favorite show, I still need references to get the details right. Cut me some slack.

Re: Morals - All I'll say is that an anime convention is probably the last place one should be lecturing someone on morals. Between the booths selling yaoi/etc., the scantily- or skankily-dressed people, the people cosplaying from clearly violent shows (think blood-splattered butchers' aprons and giant meat cleavers), and the 18+ programming, the best you'll get is laughed at.

I'm surprised I wasn't mistaken for a sparklepire on Halloween this past year. Though the fake blood dripping from the sides of my mouth and the painfully obvious fangs (that I will need to get better ones if I ever do this again) probably had something to do with it.

I don't understand why someone would even show up at an anime convention if they think yaoi is "immoral." Unless, of course, they turned up specifically to give people a hard time about it. If that's the case, I can only say that there are too many people who don't have enough to do.

And the Twilight girl...You gotta love the way she contradicts you. "No, you're dressed as Bella." WTF? I wasn't even aware that Bella dressed any particular way...

Maybe, I was kinda drained due to the emotional stress before the con, I just looked like I had the whole Kirsten Stewart blandness look down.

I actually know quite a few who would show up to an anime con despite thinking that yaoi is immoral. The crucial difference between them and the preachy lady is that they wouldn't bother to lecture people about it. ::sage nod::

That's what I was wondering. Bella doesn't really have a costume or look per se, she just dresses as Ordinary Teenage Girl.

(Yes, I admit, I read the first book. It was painfully bad. Glad I checked it out from the library rather than paying money for it. And I did see the RiffTrax version of the movie, which had me ROTFL.)

Holy crap, there ARE other people on this planet who like Read or Die ^_^

Awesome OAV's, the successor TV show...er...good but not as good. Gotta love the wonderfully preposterous premise of the whole thing, tho {spoilered, highlight to view}:

The British Library is out to take over the world, with the help of clones of literary figures and ....uhm...paperkinetics? o_O Not sure what you'd call someone who can make paper fly, turn it hard enough to stop a bullet at point-blank range, or create a self-motile flying vehicle.

                      It's really, really well-done, too.

You know, if I had the guts (and the money.. and a nearby convention), I'd cosplay as a character cosplaying as a character. Totally fuck with people.

(Closest I've come is SoulCalibur IV, dressing up Tira as Harley Quinn from Batman: The Animated Series and dressing up Taki as Kunimitsu from Tekken.)
