  • 13 cents is Life or Death, and Other Tales

So I've gotten back into Ebay and Amazon selling lately on the side to try and reduce the amount of collectibles sitting around our home. (They are not....toddler proof. As my beta tape of Captain Harlock sadly attests)

Gotten SO many wackos lately too...

    THIS ISN'T PERFECT

Had to ship a book recently to Alaska...I'm on the East Coast. I notified her that due to my location, it would probably be the arse-end of the shipping time estimate before she received the book, and that I would do my best to package it nicely, to prevent it from being dinged en route...etc etc. She was very nice, said she understood, and that it happened all the time when she ordered from the "main states".

Two weeks later I check my feedback and notice she dinged me HARDCORE on item description because... "there was a very slight dent in the one corner of the cover, that you can only see in the light". I tried emailing her to see if she was upset over it, and she was cheerful and perky about it. "No no, the book's in better shape than you said! I'm very happy with the transaction!"

....Okay then...thank you for tanking my score.....

    Curse You Best Offer

Short and sweet, had a guy flip out at me and threaten to report me to Ebay for not taking his Best Offer on an item.

The amusing part? It was for a fraction of the listed price....and I do not have a Best Offer option on that item. Yeah, you have fun reporting that I am a bad seller for not adhering to a sales option I don't have.

    THIRTEEN CEEEENTS

So for one of the items I sell, I make sure to ship them in hard cases, in thick bubble wrapped envelopes, for the item's safety. I note this several times in the auction, and since its frankly expensive stuff, I charge a flat $3.00 S&H fee.

I had a sale recently, where the guy happened to be fairly nearby, and he ordered it early in the morning, so I managed to get it out in the mail same day. I contacted him to let him know, and he thanked me for it.

Two days later, I get a frothing at the mouth email about "what a ripoff I was". Confused, I asked if something was wrong.

"I've filed a complain with Ebay and I want a refund because of your stupid <beep> shipping rates you <beep>. You charged me $3 for the shipping of the item, and the sticker here says it was $2.87 to ship. You'd better give my money back now or else im filing with Paypal and Ebay and getting your account banned."

I calmly replied that, sorry, the $3 rate is flat, and covers shipping AND handling costs. Aaaand of course I get a notification the next day that there was a complaint filed. I replied nicely, showed confirmation that the item arrived (thank you delivery conf.) and the email correspondence. They sided with me, of course.

Buuut, as a last response, the dude dinged my Shipping rating on Ebay really badly, and now I've got a notification that I'm on my first strike or something about it. <.< Which confuses me, but oh well.

A Happy Ending....(not in that way, Sheldon).

I sold one of my favorite PS1 games recently to pay off the last bit of one of our debts (yay debt crushing!), and since it really broke my heart to have to do it, I wrote a little note on the invoice to the buyer. I said thank you for buying the game, and that I really hoped they enjoyed it, and that they had as good memories playing it as I did.

They actually sent me an email a few days later thanking me for the note, and that he'd bought it for their son. He'd always enjoyed it, and that he wanted his kid to have fun with it as well. He promised to take good care of the game, and thanked me again.

I'm gonna miss the game (might buy it off the PSN later anyways), but it made me happy that someone else is going to still get to have fun playing it. =D

Handling charges are COMPLETELY up to the seller...as long as they're stated as shipping AND handling charges when the customer decides to buy, they have no right to complain later. Sure, some of us really get screwed on handling charges and who knows if they're really necessary or just to get more profit for the seller...but I'm sure charging too much for S&H ends up biting the seller in the end so it makes much more sense to charge a fair amount. Wow, you got a whopping 13 cents for your work, Seraph...guess you can retire to Tahiti now, eh?

Wow...some people care waaayyy too much about change! Normal people hate change. I mean, seriously. I think it will cost more than 13 cents to issue the refund for 13 cents!!! At TB some SC's will throw fits when I forget to give them their penny. One guy even accused me of trying to "steal" his penny. Come on dude....it's a penny. What can you buy with a penny? You can't even buy something at a PENNY CANDY store with a penny!! Let the penny go!

And kinda OT, but whenever I read one of your posts, I have to scroll down until your icon is hidden. It hypnotises me!!! I try to read, but my eyes drift up to the icon again and again and again.....

$3!!!! they're complaining about that? I've had to pay $30 s&h before, for something that cost bugger all near that. Hell, the shipping on an item I'm looking at getting is going to be about $250 .

If it happens again, I'd just ask the person straight out why they gave the low score then, that's a rotten way to do business on their part.

He must not buy much that isn't in stores, then. Every single purchase I've made has had an extra amount, far over 13 cents, plopped on for handling charges.

The only time I balked at it wasn't even the seller's fault but a default charge from Amazon. I purchased four used books and because of their policy of separate billing (at that time, I don't know if it's still in place), I was charged four times for shipping/handling even though they all came in the same box. Four S/H charges were almost $30, and it only cost her $6 or so to send. I never got the difference refunded either.

When i sold on ebay i used to get complains about the postage charges....going off memory as this was around 7 years ago....stamps were £2.58, the package was bubble wrap then in a large jiffy padded envelope which cost around 28p i charged £2.90 p&p rounding it up that few pennys...the amount of emails i got asking why i had over charged them......they honestly thought padding and envelopes were free items......dumb people.

Is there any way you can ask her to have the rating changed, or appeal it via eBay, as it's obvious that her "1-5" rating had nothing to do with her actual opinion?

Can't you just point these guys to the dispute resolution that says that they found in your favor? Besides, it sounds like it costs you more than 13 cents in packaging anyway >_>

                    Ah, ebay memories...

My mother once bought a $0.25 item, with a nice S/H charge (maybe $5-6). The seller stuck the shipping label on the box of the item and called it a day. My mother laughed so hard, since it seemed the seller was making his money off shipping...

The other memorable eBay story involves a CD set, imported. We paid for it, and waited. And waited. Other buyers in the same auction went ballistic, since there was no communication with the seller--he's fallen off the face of the earth. I told my mother to keep waiting for a bit longer, and we were rewarded. The seller had some personal problems, but thanked us profusely for being patient. And yes, I got my CD's.

yeah why do people understand s&h INCLUDES more than just the amount of postage. And well, if the charge was upfront, you really need to go to ebay and get that ding reversed and make sure they know it is because your SC is upset about .13 cents.

Altough, I have had sellers complain that I gave them neutral feedback, like I'm sorry it wasn't stellar service but it wasn't bad, hence neutral, yell at me again I'm more likely to take it negative. As I hate people who always put "A+++++++++ service" I actually like feedback to be useful.

                        THIS. PERCISELY. EXACTAMULLY.

It's called 'shipping and HANDLING' for a reason...Which, to me, implies "and packaging" as well.

A few months back I sold a book on Amazon and sent it off. Now this was February and us here in MO had quite a few bad storms/tornadoes so the mail service wasn't as being as fast as usual because of it all. About a month later (which was still in the time-frame for the delivery) I got a down right bitchy email full of attitude. I told her that it was in fact still in the time-frame, MO had several horrible storms along with the New Year's Day tornado that was still causing us problems, and to please be patient. I also made a comment about her attitude and how it wasn't appreciated because it really wasn't.

A few days later I got a noticed from the post office that they had in fact lost the package somewhere outside of New York (where it was heading) so I messaged her back and gave her an offer, either wait for it to be found and shipped on or accept a refund. She took the refund and gave me a horrible review because of the lateness of the book. Good thing I really could care less about my score. Amazon is just a place for me sell off old textbooks.

I've had that happen on occasion with items I've bought from Amazon sellers . . . mostly with some of my DVD's. Mom and I laugh and say that title must really be good for it to be so cheap . . .

It's a simple concept for me, really: if I want the item for that price, then I pay shipping as well. Can't have one without the other.
