Hello again, everyone! I has the interwebs for a bit, so here is a recent story...
Yesterday, I had a 50-something lady come in looking for present-type items suitable for an uncle of hers for Sunday. No problem, right? Well, maybe.
First, she wanted Dominos, but I only had sets with colored pips, whereas she wanted black ones. Fair enough.
Then she wanted a Resident Evil T-shirt, as it's her uncle's favorite videogame. Sadly, right now the store is lacking in game-related shirts, and we only have movie and comicbook related ones. I find her one from The Walking Dead (show, not comic) and she loves it.
YAY, right? No.
After asking me if I watch the show, and somewhat nastily laughing that I am "behind the times" for not having internet/television at my apartment
, she asks what sizes I have said T-shirt in. Unfortunately, it seems that I only have 2 XXL sized shirts, but I 100% KNOW that our sister store (2 hours away) has a M and L size, as I brought them down to sister store personally only 1 day ago.
I let her know this, and tell her I can have the shirt here by Saturday morning for her. She tells me "No, *SIGH* I'll just find it online!" Ok then...
As she looks around the store some more, I tidy up at the front, cleaning the glass counters. As she's about to leave, she stops at the counter and this happens;
SC: You know, I used to come here with my grandson ALL the time, and you used to have SO MANY shirts. What the heck happened to them all?
Me: (Still wiping down glass) Oh, well we did used to have about double the shirts we have now, but that changed because of the internet.
SC: What do you mean?
Me: I mean, sometimes a T-shirt that we carry for $14 because of overhead can usually be bought online for $10. Unfortunately, people just don't seem to support the smaller, local stores as much anymore, so we don't carry as much of the product that we used to.
I straighten up and turn towards her to see this;
SC: Well! THAT was quite RUDE!
Me:
I'm sorry...What was rude?
SC: You! Just now!
Me:
What did I do?
SC: You said that the reason you don't carry as much is because people shop online...RIGHT AFTER I SAID I WAS GOING TO BE LOOKING ONLINE FOR THAT SHIRT! eleventy! (Starts to almost literally stomp her way out of the store)
Me: I'm sorry, ma'am, but it is the truth...
She gives me the dirtiest look I've gotten in a while and leaves.
My question is this; I don't think that I was rude, just honest. It's not like I told her "If you buy things online, you're going to make people lose their jobs, AND go to hell, AND you suck for not buying local". I simply answered her question as I've answered many questions about why we don't carry all the departments we used to. Does anyone here think I really WAS rude?
