  • Coupon Idiots

A man comes to the Uscan with a few things, among them 3 cases of a 24-pack of water we have on sale this week. He's been on the Uscan a few times and EVERY time he says he doesn't know how to use it and I need to do it for him. I was only telling him to come to register 5 because it only had 1 person on line while the other 2 registers had 2 people on line. Well, my mistake. I scan everything and then he gives me coupons. He hands me three coupons for the waters. One problem though: They're all for TWO cases, so I could only use one since he has 3 packs. Here's where the suck begins.

Me: Sir, these coupons are all for two cases. I can only take one of them since you have 3 cases.
SC: Why can't you take these all?
Me: Because the coupons are for two cases each and you only bought 3. If you want to get another I can take two of the coupons. I can't go against what the coupon states.
SC: But the coupons are for individual bottles, not the whole pack. Each one has 24 bottles!
Me: No, they're each for two whole packs, not bottles.
SC: Where does it say that? You must not read English very well.
Me: Right here it says for 2.
SC: Yes, for two of the bottles. Where does it say the coupon is for the whole pack?
Me: Right here in the bold print it says on multi-packs and then 24 bottles are larger in parentesis.
SC: *Denies that it says this* Where is *manager's name*?
Me: She just left. I can get you the person who is here right now.
SC: No, just take them all off! I am going to call tomorrow and speak to a manager about this!

Yeah, you do that. How about you learn to read English and figure out what's on the freggin coupon! This guy is always bossy to the cashier and always find a price or coupon like this to complain about and try to pull one over on a cashier.

And right after him there was a woman that couldn't be bothered to scan her own items either and then gave me several coupons that were for items she didn't buy and also one that expired last August! I did accidently do one though that she didn't have the right item though because the register just asked me to put in the amount for the free item coming off (the coupon was to get 1 free pack of flavored water packets if you bought a 24 pack of water that was different from what she bought) and didn't say the coupon must match previous sale. I'll admit I only read the 24 pack water part though.

On top of this, I got spoken to for not taking a tip from a customer. Ugh, what a day

Ack, multi-product discounts drive me batty. You have to buy two, as in TWO separate tubes of toothpaste to save a dollar. Not a single twin pack with one single bar code. And the buy 12 cans of dog food and get one free? Don't tell me the 12 pack with a single bar code counts as 12 individual cans. It goes by quantity scanned, not the quantity in the package.

And yeah, I never won those battles either.

Wait, what? When I was in retail, we had it drilled into our heads that accepting gifts or gratuities could get us fired.

I never understood why cashier's couldn't take tips. I wasn't allowed to when I worked at Mikasa. I think you should be able to also. I'm sure there's a good reason though.

And ugh to the coupons. Damn people. Grr.

prolly to discourage dishonesty. "Hey, it's that lady who always tips me! I'll 'miss' a few items for her."

also, cashiers (and baristas, and sandwich shop employees, etc.) are assumedly making full wage already...

wouldn't mind if baggers could take them though, they often go above and beyond.

Reading SC's always do it wrong. I think one of the signs of the Apocalypse is when the masses actually start reading everything correctly

In my experience, it's almost always been a situation where, somewhere along the line (read: as little as ONE time, either in the manager's experience or in the chain's history), a bagger or someone taking items out to the car got a little too pushy about asking for a tip, to the point of either DEMANDING one, or making the customer feel uncomfortable. The standard response for this is to forbid acceptance of tips at all, even if the customer wants to do so and insists upon it -- to the point that, if a customer literally, physically places a tip in one's apron pocket or hand, a bagger can get in trouble for not physically stopping them from doing so.

Effectively, it's a case of one person, or a very small number of people, screwing it up for everyone else.

I've had people (usually little old ladies whom I've helped load shopping into vehicles) try to tip me. When I've refused, stating it's against company policy etc., they just stick it into my shirt pocket and go along their merry way. When that happened, I always made a point of notifying a supervisor and then sticking the money into a collection box for our store's current charity of choice in full view of the supervisor.
They never seemed to have a problem with that.

It's to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

Because so much money goes through the registers, they don't want other, unaccounted for money floating about.

Plus, the whole deal with the possibility of doing "favors" for those who tip beyond just being as helpful as possible.

Spoken to for for not taking a tip from a customer?? When i was working at Sam's Club, we were told we weren't allowed to accept tips. So sometimes people would give me a tip, I'd tell them about the tip policy & then they'd get pissed off. So after a while, I said screw it & kept the moolah...lol.

Oh geez, he thought the coupons were for two individual bottles, and his multi-packs would qualify for that?? That's just stupid.

Coupons that make you buy more than one item suck. I hardly ever use coupons anymore because they're all for 2, 3 or even 4 items, especially when it's for all of ONE dollar and each item costs over $3.00? Forget it.
