Yes, denial ALWAYS negates an particular experience (or credit charge) from ever having happened.

Actually ran across a trip sales call where the sales person already had my card number. Years ago, before I got into banking. Freaked me out. For whatever reason, decided to listen to the pitch, and he got to the prices and said "ok, would you like me to charge **** **** **** ****, just rattled off my card number. Immediately told him no, I did not want to purchase.

Second mistake I made was not calling to cancel the card right away. Waited until Monday when the charge from the trip, that I had declined, hit the card. Fortunately, I called up the company to complain and they got the charge credited back. But still really freaked me out that they'd already had my card number to begin with.

I had something similar happen to me. I think it was some sort of credit card insurance. I declined, but my card was charged. Turned out the company doing the selling was contracted to the credit card issuer and had been provided with the credit card number. The charge was reversed.

            Update:

So I get my notification in my e-mail this afternoon to go back and pull this file to see if quality had reviewed the call and what was said.

Quality did review the call, scored the sales agent "EXCELLENT". Said the agent clearly explained all charges, rules, and regulations of the sales package. Furthermore, not only was the SC told he was being charged, but the SC actually verbally confirmed the amount back with the agent "Okay, so that is $xxx.xx?". The call was perfect.

            Then I see another note.

He called into Customer Care (a different department from mine) and complained. Got escalated to a Supervisor. Said Supervisor saw ALL the notes from me and from quality and............................................... .

...................you guessed it! Gave him a FULL REFUND in "the interest of guest satisfaction"

You just can't be bothered by what the idiots in other departments might do; it'll give you ulcers.

At least you know that the agent did their job and you did yours. That someone else is going to throw money away for no good reason (because I believe you lose money even when you do a full refund), that's on them and their managers.

I wish "Consumer" blogs, columnists, articles, etc. would stop telling customers to use the Jedi Mind Trick as a negotiation tactic; it just doesn't work.

Too bad the sales agent is going to lose the commission from the sale due to the guest's lies and management's lack of a backbone.

Hopefully not. Every place is different, but many places (not retail) do not dock commission after it has been paid out in the event of a "return".

Sounds from the OP that the trip hasn't been taken yet. This being the case, all they really lost was the credit card processing fees (plural; one for the charge and one for the reversal). It's not as bad as if he'd already gone and come back, and then tried to get the charge reversed.

Although there is probably somewhere a supervisor with the spine of a squid (thank you Doug McKenzie) who'd even refund him then.

So how long before he calls to schedule the trip he got the refund for?

Actually, I predict he'll call from the airport because they have no reservation on file for him. "Yeah, I told them to refund my money and cancel the trip, but I didn't think they actually WOULD do so!"

(I HOPE that the refund included a cancellation of all reservations made.)

People like this can never truly be *satisfied*. You could give him free first-class trips for life and he would complain about the bottled water being the "wrong brand"...
