I'm planning to get a pedal-powered generator. Should put out more than enough juice to keep cell phones charged and maybe even power a few things like the electric kettle.

Oh, cool, where would you get one of those? That would be perfect for me - I'm a cyclist and God knows I can pedal all day with no problem whatsoever....!

*sigh* I suspect we're going to be retuning about 250 of the 300+ generators we sold...
How about a "no refunding" on articles like that..... They are prolly used anyway (I would test it BEFORE I needed it)

I'm sure we'll get the stories about those coming in soon enough. It would be quite reasonable for stores to deny refunds on generators for exactly that reason...which means that 70% of the people who bought them will probably try to return them anyway >_<

I know whenever we sold generators at the wholesale club, they were explicitly labeled: "NON RETURNABLE." This was because the gennies were gas-powered, and once they left the store, we could no longer guarantee they hadn't had gas put into them, so we could not accept returns.

You shoudl see the bitching and moaning on the power co's FB page about how its not fair, and despite being told to CALL in any outages, that they cannot take any info ON FB, people still are asking when they will be restored, or pissing and moaning about how long tis taking or will take.

STFU and get over yourselves; the crews, along with many from a bunch of other states, are working their behinds off, and just beacuse you don't see them working, or gasp, having a meal, or trucks parked at motels (do you really want someone with no sleep fixing your power?) doesn't mean they aren't working on fixing the problems. The co. has been great about keeping everyone up to date on what's going on, but there are still a lot of unknowns, which they can't see until they actually go out to areas to work on the problems. The entitlement boggles my mind!
My Power Co's FB page is no different. So many people for some reason want to see a truck. I would rather have them working on major problems to restore power vs driving around. They have cars, pickups and SUV's to survey damage. That was done. No need to have truck derive around when they know what the problem is and will get to it.

Also if you haven't done so CALL IT IN. I bet may of the whiners who complain that their street is out but the next one over was restored never called it in.

I have to wonder why people are worried about keeping their computers (more specifically their laptops) & cellphones powered - if you've lost power, unless you have dial-up & an internal modem then you're not gonna be surfing any time soon; similarly, your local cell tower's likely to be offline due to the same power outage you're experiencing.
Most of the large free standing towers in my are have at least battery backups. In my area the problem wasn't overloading cell towers, landlines, and cable/internet/VoIP service. The cell towers and regular land lines only seemed to have batteries to last a day at best. cable/internet/VoIP slightly less. About a day in or so these started to fail as crews had to scramble to access these sites to get generators hooked up to get them back online.

I always get whined at because I buy "too much". (i.e. I buy things before I need them)

And then things go pear shaped (only financially so far, but it would save me from other disasters)...and guess who doesn't have to race to the store to buy something? Yeah.
