  • Because we don't care...

So, we're full of workers staying long-term. (Over 50% of our occupancy!) Our standard rooms don't have microfridges or microwaves. The handful that do are booked through May. So, a lot of these workers don't have fridges or microwaves in their rooms. And they whine about it, but reluctantly accept their fate. Well, most of them do.

I got a survey response from a guest. It said something along the lines of, "I was going to stay for 4-5 weeks, but I checked out early. You guys don't have FoxNews, microwaves, or fridges in the room. For the price, you aren't good for long-term."

Okay, fair enough. I just sent a general form apology. I also added a simple note inviting him to check back with our brand in the future, as FoxNews is a channel that Corporate has been negotiating on adding for some time.

What I got back peeved me:
"If you really cared about me as a guest, you'd find a way to get me FoxNews and a microwave & fridge. You obviously don't care and your excuses are lame."

First off, I wasn't lying about FoxNews being added in the future. It's on the table. It's been on the table for a while, but it's there. But adding even one channel is hella expensive...we're talking about adding that channel to all rooms in all locations. We can't just order the channel to an individual room, or even an individual property!

And I'm sooooo sorry I can't pull minifridges and microwaves out of my ass. </sarcasm> Really, I can't just buy one, since I have to go through our vendor contracts. They get cranky. (Not to mention that as soon as these workers leave, I'd be left with a ton of extra minifridges and not enough standard rooms.) Maybe invest in one yourself if you're going to be gone for so long?

I hope that asshole couldn't find anything in town and has to commute from Everett (which several of his coworkers already are being forced to do).

ETA: Please avoid bashing the channel itself. I don't want this thread getting locked for Fratching.

Seriously. How much would it cost - maybe $200? I'd call that a good investment for a long-term stay, especially since it would save him money since he wouldn't have to buy fast food all the time.

small ones run from $50(ones that will hold maybe 6-12 cans of soda or small amounts of food-to $100 for a 2.5 cubic foot, and a microwave around $30.
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

About 8 years ago I had to stay in a hotel for two weeks for work.

There was no fridge in a standard room, and they had already rented out the ones they had.

So I ran over to sprawl-mart and bought a thermoelectric cooler for $40.

I still use it for camping and as an extra fridge for prepping big holiday meals.

"If you cared, you'd make everything I want happen NOW, but since I'm not getting my way then whine-whine-whine."

Just another case of entitlement whore. I really don't understand the need to be constantly pissy about minor irritations.

OY! The OP has asked VERY nicely that you guys not do the Fox News Fratch. And yet some of you have. There will be infractions if you carry on down this route!

I wonder if the price he would pay for the fridge and microwave offset the difference he'd be paying between a standard room and one with those items already in it.

And as for not having a channel the SC's want, I think I can relate. I once had a guest staying in my hotel who was not just upset, but pissed that we didn't carry CNBC, and even accused the owners of being politically biased.

(Can we also add CNBC to stuff I don't want getting debated on over?)

Some people just don't use their brains. When housing is that tight, you take what you can get and don't bitch.

If it had been me, I'd have bought my own mini fridge and microwave, and then sold them to some other sucker wanting a fridge and microwave in their hotel room when I moved out.

And to hell with news channels of any stripe. I want my BBC America

Exactly! If you're staying 4-5 weeks, investing in a small fridge & microwave would be well worth the trouble. Makes me wonder how much more he's paying now that he switched to another hotel which does, I assume, have the items he wants.

And I'm glad I rarely got channel-complainers when I used to work night audit. The biggest complaint was that we had too few channels, since having most standard channels plus HBO & Showtime wasn't a good selection, apparently.

Wouldn't it be great if he ended up having to get a room about 50 miles away and it didn't have a fridge and microwave either! Some people just want to pay the cheapest rate, but then expect it to include all the amenities, guess they don't realize all those extras cost the hotel to provide, so your rate is going to be higher.

I thought that Hotels just went through the local cable companies. Is there some bizarre law not allowing that?

No, you don't. All they have are the lame 'reality' shows that american channels have already copied or vice-versa. No QI or any of the other good panel shows I've had to find through various, let's call them, privateer sites.

Does anyone know of BBC America is actually BBC run or did they just license the brand?
