  • Thank you, kind stranger

Just got told this from a relative:

Today, an elderly and increasingly frail member of my family back in Australia was in a shopping centre and went to buy a drink, have some lunch and to just sit down in a cafe

When she went to pay for her lunch - she was told that a stranger had pointed her out and paid for her lunch and then walked away.

So, whoever you are - I want to say thank you - for whatever reason you decided to help a beloved member of my family - your kind act resonates many thousands of kilometres away here in Japan and you helped to restore a bit more faith in those of us who are fast losing their faith.

    Thank you, kind stranger.

That is so sweet! It really makes me think people aren't so bad after all.
On the same thread, when I was a little girl, an old man in McDonalds once complimented my mother on how well behaved I was and how he never sees manners in children anymore. Then he bought me ice cream.
It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision.

Ah, yes, the free stuff for not being a little hellion.

My brother and I, who usually fought like bitter enemies while at home, were incredibly well-behaved when out with our mother. We got so many compliments and freebies because of that.

That's so nice! When I was waiting tables, a man did that- he saw an elderly couple he knew from his mom's church or something, and he told me to just add their bill to his bill, and not to tell them until after he'd left (he was finishing up while they had just arrived.) It made me so happy to tell them that a nice person who knew them had taken care of their bill! The older gent even tried to tip me, even though I told them the young man had covered their tip as well. (And he did, too. And it was a good tip!)

There's a lot of ugliness in the world, and little things like that can mean a lot. Ok, I'll stop, I sound like a Hallmark card!

This is THE nicest thing I have heard in the longest time.

But I have to disagree with you, Mariamousie. People ARE bad. But I'm sure you know there are exceptions to every rule. This guy was one of those exceptions. Its why stories like this are so rare and why customerssuck.com is so very very popular.

At my store we're allowed to do random acts of kindness - we're encouraged to carry sample stickers with us, and give things away if someone hasn't tried them before. Or if they were unhappy with anything. Or just because. As long as we document the name of the item, the department it's from, and retail price (easily done by doing a price inquiry on the register, it prints all the info on the receipt when you do that). No price limit, "just use common sense".

Awhile back I had a foodstamp customer who's kids really wanted something from the bakery. But it wasn't covered by her foodstamp card, and didn't have enough cash. I asked her to wait with me for a minute after the transaction was done. Did a price inquiry, put a sample sticker on it, and handed it to her kids and told them to have a great day. She looked like she wanted to cry.. and my boss was completely okay with me doing it when I turned in the price inquiry.

I've done other random acts of kindness, but that's the one that stands out most in my mind.

Every now and again when I go through the drive-through for the morning hit of caffeine, and all I have is a $20 for a $1.65 purchase, I'll tell the person at the window to give me $10 back and take the other $8.35 to pay for the people behind me.

Apologies to those here that work a drive-through till, but a deposit to the karma bank can't hurt.

That reminds me of a funny story- I was on the metro in DC when a man (obviously a tourist- you can just tell) looked at his farecard and said "Weird, I must have paid too much, I still have 3 bucks on here. I don't need it- does anyone want this?" Which would have been fine, except on the DC metro you pay when you leave, not when you go in. So if the woman next to him hadn't told him that, he would have ended up paying double.
So I guess it was two acts of kindness, in a way.
