  • Awesome Jet Blue Employee

Hi Everyone! This is my first post, so I figured I'd make it a happy one!

This happened almost 3 years ago now. I had studied abroad in Germany for six months and was finally coming home in mid-July. Of course, having never taken an international flight into the US, I didn't realize that having an hour and a half to change flights at JFK was not nearly enough time. By the time I got through customs, got my luggage and finally found the Delta gate (after almost losing my passport and getting lost)... I missed check-in by a few minutes. Even though the flight was delayed by 45 minutes, the computer had locked me out (confirmed by my sister's boyfriend's mother who worked for Delta). The Delta manager was very nice about it and I understood there was nothing I could do. The next flight they had was in the morning, but I had nowhere to stay. Now I knew from friends studying with me that JetBlue had a later flight into Boston that night, so I call my mom and have her book it while I try to find the right terminal.

At this point I was a mess. I had been traveling for 10 or so hours, was homesick, stressed, etc. I also had two overweight suitcases, an extra bag, my purse and my laptop. I finally got to the JetBlue counter and blurted out tearily "Hi. I missed my other flight. My mom booked me onto the flight to Boston, but I don't know the booking number. I also have two overweight bags and an extra bag to check" This wonderful man simply asked for my mom's name and told me he was only going to charge me $50 for the extra bag and that was it! He got me all set up and was super nice. Ever since then I have only flown JetBlue, simply because that counter guy was so absolutely wonderful!

Welcome aboard! It's always nice to find a kind person willing to help you out when you're in a bind.

I've never flown any type of commercial passenger airliner, but I've heard airline travel can be a rough experience sometimes. My own experiences with flying are limited to small private planes.

I got to ride in one and "copilot" as part of a special program run by the local airport to introduce children to the joys of flying. The irony is that I have a fear of heights, but I was excited about riding in an airplane. I actually did pretty well even though I did get nervous a couple of times when the pilot turned the plane upside down to show me how it can maneuver.

The only other time I've been in an airplane was my sophomore year of high school. I was the managing editor of student news magazine, and also copy editor for the student literary magazine. The advisor over the journalism and mass communications program was also the photography instructor, and I'd taken his photography class that year. He picked a couple of us from the photography class to get some aerial photos of campus and the community for the student planner designed every year by the student publications department. I told him that I did have a fear of heights, but would try it anyway. I did pretty well managing my nerves despite a little vertigo. I guess it helped that I did know the pilot who took the group up because he was also my high school biology teacher, and I told him that there is a chance I could experience vertigo.
