Ran through Safeway after work to pick up some beer (yeah yeah, I know, bad bean).
There was a good sized line, and only 1 register open, since it was 11pm. But nobody behind me. The CSM (going by her name tag) was extremely apologetic about the wait, then noticed I was in uniform for... the competing store across the street.
We start bullshitting a bit, she asks what I do, I tell her I'm a cashier, then we start quizzing each other on PLUs (she lost when I asked her what the PLU was for a habanero... 3125... also a tomatillo is 4801). I still claim I'm the PLU master, I pull out the code book less than a half dozen times a day for produce now (a bit more for bulk grocery stuff).
Then she mentions she's heard the company I work for is a good place to work and we start discussing benefits, and finally.... pay.
Her jaw drops when I tell her I make $12/hour and I've been there almost 4 years. She used to make 14/hour at WaySafe, but went to a competing store when they opened as a salaried manager, got demoted to cashier, and came back to WaySafe and started at the bottom. Apparently I make quite a bit more than her (she's in the upper $10/hr range as a low level manager). Then she really freaks when I tell her how cheap medical is with the Whole (but it's a very high deductible plan with no mental health or substance abuse coverage). Aside from a 9 month gap when she went to a competitor, she's been at WayofSafe for almost 10 years........
Basically she's saying OMFG HOW DO I GET HIRED.
Turns out she lives really close to a store that's currently under construction.
So D, I hope that the compliment I sent via the Safeway website at least gets you a pat on the back and hopefully a raise.. and please please please PLEASE follow my advice on how to get into the company I work for (you basically only get hired F/T for new stores now, and they're about to start posting openings for the new store by your home), you seriously rock and definitely know your way around retail and food service. Turns out we both were management for pizza places around the same time too.
edit: she accidentally tried to give me $13 instead of $8 for my change, since we were so busy bullshitting about, uh, PLUs and keystroke sequences and other cashier nerd shit. I handed it back and told her "Uh... you should take $5 out of this". Whoops! Still want her in my store though, she would be an awesome coworker.
