I use floppy drives mainly for BIOS flashes (heard too many horror stories about the Windows-based flash utils that some motherboard vendors have), as well as for recovering data from old floppy discs if someone happens to throw one my way.

They're also useful for some low level diagnostics. Some machines *cough*Dell*Cough* don't like to take the UBCD, so I just whip out my handy dandy floppy drive and run the ram tester from that.

Every PC I've built (all 3 of 'em at this point, not counting upgrades) has had a multi-function "Media Reader" that I can use for reading memory sticks (SD, CF, and about 15 others on the one on my own rig). I haven't had to use it but once in two years, but I always shell out the extra five bucks to get one that can do floppies as well.

My newest system's mobo doesn't even have a connection for the floppy drive.

It's the only system I've ever built without one, and I've already wished it did. Had to use the Windows Recovery Console to essentially do a manual system restore. Having a floppy on which to store a batch file written on another computer, and use on the ailing one, would've sped things up quite a bit. Instead I ended up removing the hard drive and connecting it via my nifty little SATA/IDE->USB adapter to a working computer and performing the surgery that way.

I had a computer class where I didn't miss a single question, but the teacher missed about 20% of them.

Many of the programs on the Apple //e could only be exited by rebooting. That was in the days before hard disks were readily available, so we were always switching the floppies about. To stop one program and run another meant rebooting the computer with a different floppy.

I was going to reply -- but that's the answer They took an apple computer and typing instructor and made her the computer teacher since "they were the same" more or less.... BUT.... they never gave her any training on it. This was before the schools even used color display computers though, just as to not make her seem completely stupid or anything. At the same time, however, she never restarted the computer herself between programs -- so she contradicted herself lol.

I mean come on, I had a (very basic) programming course for the apple //e and one of the first things taught was how to code an exit command!

Some of the worst I've ever heard was from another "technician" when I used to do phone support:

"DOS? That's obsolete, no one uses that anymore". (This was back in 1999).
"What's a driver?"
"You can't format a hard drive"

Of course, one of my first jobs, and I am going to age myself now:

Customer: I need new computer
Me: (tells him about the new computers)
Customer: Do these have a math coprocessor?
Me: They don't need them anymore. With the DX processors the math coprocessor is built in. You only needed it with the SX and XT processors.
Customer: I was told I had to get one with a math coprocessor, though.
Me: It's built in to the main processor.
Customer: Are you sure? We do accounting and we need our math to be accurate, which is why we need the math coprocessor.

Actually, TI-99/4A require reboots between apps. CP/M could be put on any computer. It's the way they did what java does now, platform independence language. Infact I probably should see if I can find a CP/M card for my 99/4A. I think that the only thing I don't have.

Of course this is all before hot-swap and personal hard-drives.

When I was at university the computers in one comp lab were running way slow.... everything worked, but very slowly. Turned out some turkey had swiped the math coprocessors and replaced them with emulation software.

Oddly enough, my task for the night if I ever get out of comp time HELL is to find a Vista driver for mine. Compaq (when I last checked) only had XP drivers for my PC. It's getting a little annoying.
