  • DO NOT LIE TO ME!!!

    Seriously!!

I email a user, tell him that I'll need to reload Windows on his PC and to let me know when he is in the store and the laptop is directly connected to the network (meaning plugged into an RJ-45 that is directly connected to our network - not remote, not though an aircard).

    He responds, it's connected.

I can't remote into it - I do a tracert into the computer and it leads me somewhere else, not my company.

He confirms that it is directly on the network.

I still can't get in so I tell him that the IP address the network is seeing is not directly on the network, it is leading to AT&T DSL service.

    Oh, I'm home now.

Yeah, do you try that one with your bosses, too? No wonder this is a trouble store.

    Why?

Why do people who do not have a technical background in a subject try lying to people who are experts in the said subject.

It seems to happen most often in the computer/electronic area but I have seen it all over. And of-course they don't have the skills to hide the evidence.

Don't tell a computer person that the computer has not worked for a year when I can see files created three weeks ago on your hard drive.

Don't tell a cop you were not speeding before the crash when he can get the black box records (another computer) for your car from the mechanic.

Don't tell the sales person that the return is brand new when that line of product was discontinued two years ago and everything was sold out at last year's Black Monday.

Worse is we may believe your lies and then carry out an action (repair) that makes things WORSE!

That's why you need to put a small (ounce or so should do it) shaped charge on the black box, and wired into the airbag circuit so it will go off (destroying the memory chips in the black box) in the event of a crash.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

But now you are assuming fore-thought and personal skills on the part of the SC.
