  • But it worked fine 6 years ago

Myself and a group volunteer to support the PC's/network/phones/AV equipment at a NFP. In 2002/03 we were tasked with taking 8-10 yo Macs out of service and replacing them with fully networked PC's. We have a specialized member management application that tricks members, groups, donations, etc that was supposed to run on a server. This is mission critical. When we first made the transition the decision was made to purchase a regular PC for than and next year buy the server and re-purpose the PC.

Guess what happened. It never happened. Evey year we have been begging for money to buy a server, but it always gets cut. Of course each year the software upgrades require better hardware. It finally happened. Our latest upgrade will not run on the PC.

As it stands when the app is run on multiple PC's it slows to a crawl making people think it has crashed. When running some simple, VERY simple, reports the PC showed 85-90% CPU usage.

So now I get to beg for money to replace it. I wonder if they will finally realize that it is necessary. Hmmmm.

    UPDATE

The powers that be finally realized that this need to be taken care of, as in replace the PC. I shoudl mention that this Pc also is used by a employee on a day to day basis in addition to playing server. They finally got the hint after it typing in Word or a email the letters wouldn't show up when you typed them, but appear a few seconds later.

Ugh. Been there, done that. When I started working in the "real world," I had a computer just like that. My boss had set my terminal (a PC) to act as a "server." But, rather than leave it as a stand-alone, I had to not only run the database applications for the entire office...but also attempt to do my job as well. As the database got larger, that proved impossible. That machine simply couldn't keep up with the demands we were placing on it. It wasn't just the database either--it was also acting as the mail and print server as well In fact, that piece of shit (and I'm being nice) crashed about 5 times a day until it was replaced.

Why did he do that? Simple. It all boiled down to money. He wanted a network, but didn't want to pay to do it correctly. After the office grew to about a half-dozen users (lusers?), that PC simply couldn't do the job. That's when it was replaced, and a proper server was installed.

Well it used to run a print server as well. A year ago we stopped that and got a few cheap 4 port switches and used the printers internal print servers. Print jobs caused it to "freeze" for a minute so much that mouse clicks would not respond until after print job was complete.

Oh, I forgot to mention we had a shard folder that all the staff can access.

Hopefully I will have money in the next month to replace it with at least another PC to play server and wipe that workstation clean and reinstall for the staff to use. If not that shared folder is going to go.

But....but...but my one main PC runs my home network fine. Surely I should be able to do the same in an office setting with many, many workstations and negligible upgrades in memory or processing power, amirite?
