  • NaNoWriMo 2014

    It's coming.

What is NaNoWriMo? It stands for NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth, and it's a "contest" (challenge, really) for aspiring writers to write a novel of at least 50,000 words in 30 days, from November 1st to November 30th.

NaNoWriMo's site can explain it better.

"Winners" get the satisfaction of knowing they did it. The point of the challenge is to write, doesn't matter what, doesn't matter how much, the point is to get your creative juices flowing.

I know there are other Wrimos on CS.com. I'll be doing my best to participate this year, and hopefully do better than in previous years (the most I ever managed in past challenges was 5000 words).

So! It may still be more than two weeks until NaNoWriMo comes, but who all will be giving it a try?

I've been debating, but I think I'll try to go for it. I've got a novella I've been playing with (it started as a short story), and I really need the kick in the pants to get it done. Not sure if it'll reach 50k though.

I'm a Municipal Liaison this year, so despite my grumbling after getting approved for the role that my heart isn't really in it this year, I've come up with a decent idea and am in the process of outlining and filling in details and preparing to write (and lead) in November.

Yeah, I think I will. We'll see how I do this year.

I may try but I hope I can do it on a tablet.

The only issue with a tablet would be the verification at the end. You have to paste the story into a count window.

Oh, I can copy and paste. It's the aching wrists I'm worried about.

I don't think I will this year, and I'll miss it. It's crazy but I enjoy it. I just don't have anything far enough along in the planning stages and I hate it when I come to a crashing halt about a third of the way through.

I've done zero planning and all of my physical, mental and emotional energy is being sucked up by the herniated disc in my back and school. But I will still do it, and whatever I scribble out, it WILL be 50k.

I decided about 5 months ago to finally do NaNo this year. It will be my first year officially participating, but I've been writing on and off for years. I have been planning, prepping, and worldbuilding ever since I decided to commit to it, so hopefully I have a solid enough base to work off of.

It's killing me because I've done it three years in a row and loved it, but I'm a no-go this year. With two jobs and school...there's just no free time this year for me.

I don't officially participate since I tend to write as my muse hits. Sadly since early summer, my muse has been on vacation so my two projects are currently stuck. Granted one is stuck due to waiting on progress with 2 other writers in the same setting.

Maybe a good sign, but my muse slipped out of neutral last night and I've added 4-5 pages to a project. Much of it might need to be rewritten depending on how events lead up to it, but at least its writing.

For those Wrimos who can't participate this year-- due to muse frustrations or time constraints-- I will helpfully point out that Nanowrimo.org does other "challenges" at other times of the year, such as during the summer ("Camp Nanowrimo") and such like. So if you can't do it this November, maybe give it a try at some other time.

Or, indeed, just arbitrarily pick a month and try your hand at the 50K-word challenge then.

I usually at least make an attempt and take part in Camp Nano too. This year? I'm not entirely sure due to a lot of stuff going on IRL.

There's another option for those who know they don't have the time to knock out 50k of original story: Cheat.

Make a lower goal. Work on something you started previously. Be a rebel in some way so that it's something you CAN do, and celebrate when you make that goal. You can still enjoy the community, the atmosphere, the writeins (if you can get to one) and everything else that comes with the November madness.
