My last name is simple, spelled exactly how it sounds, two four-letter words squished together in a compound word. It never fails that someone misspells it or asks how it's spelled. But they get my unusual first name right 99% of the time.

There are two ways to spell my youngest sister's name. Back when she worked retail, a customer once looked at her nametag and told that her name was spelled wrong.

My maiden name is like that. Two very common words smooshed together to make a compound word, yet people get it wrong most of the time. At least my first name is the single most common girl's name of all time, so unless I'm in a heavily Hispanic area (where people default to the Spanish form of the name), people generally get it right.

Update from me - and yes, celebrity names do tend toward the ridiculous, but at least they're famous or wealthy enough not to be mocked in later life... much.
Little boy in a class called Kal-El. He's short, scrawny and wears glasses. He is not going to enjoy his name when he reaches an age where his classmates get the reference.

I gave two of my sons bad names... LLewellyn (#1) and Cyrene (#2) ... at least #2 got it as a middle name for being born on Great-grandfather's 84th birthday...

I came across a kid on some show I was watching named Jacques. Normally, not a weird name, at all, but he pronounced it "ja-kwees".
That poor kid's going to be correcting people on either the spelling or pronunciation of his name forever, and I can say from experience that it gets annoying real fast.

Indeed it does - my "real" last name is a fairly common word, but for some reason, people often have a hard time hearing/pronouncing it. (For example, say my last name is "Track", but people hear it as "Tack").

I have a rather ordinary name.. my last name, however, has several ways of being spelled. Almost nobody gets it correct on the first try. Now I do have two unusual names to add though.

                    Ima (I'm a)
                    Ura (You're a)

The more unfortunate part is that the last name was Pig.

My name is unusual here in the states, its Russian and fairly outdated there. I shortened it when I started working because I hated explaining how to say it.
Mytical, Ima's last name was Hogg. She was an avid art collector and philanthropist from Texas. She didn't have a sister, thank god. Her name was bad enough!!

That sounds like a good name if Disney is going to branch out into porn.

I came to the conclusion some years back that some parents just throw a bunch of Scrabble tiles in a bag and shake them up and pour them out. Whatever order the letters come out in is what they name their child.

One of the strangest girls' names I've heard was Americus (anyone remember the film Where The Heart Is? This is what Nobilene Nation, played by Natalie Portman, named her baby girl.)

Best way to come up with a good name for your kid is practice screaming it in it's entirety - according to one of my old girlfriends. Some names are easier to scream when the kid gets in trouble than others.

But then I can't say much . . . some of the names for my fanfic characters may sound quite pretentious to others.

As in Brenda Marie Antoinette or Napoleona Margaret Alexandra Josephine. So if anyone's looking for anything along those pretentious lines, come see me.

I have a coworker who is probably in her late 20s / early 30s named Bonnie. That's one you don't see on younger people a lot. It took me a while to figure out who she was because I kept looking for gray hair.

Two brothers from a religious family I knew in High School: Micah and Josiah. I kind of like what their parents did. They could go by Joe and Mike if they wanted to have more "normal" names.

There's a Bonnie in the third season of Hell's Kitchen (one of the more "Ditzy" blondes, but she was at least one of the slightly more sweeter ones) who became runner-up. And no, it wasn't short for anything.

                                Also, this.
